The Olympics 2024 opening raised a lot of eyebrows as followers and eminent personalities around the globe pointed out that things had gone horribly wrong with the Summer Games committee trying to enact a mockery of everything divine. With scenes that looked close enough to iconic Christian symbolisms, there were ample hate comments from all across the planet.
The Holy See is saddened by some scenes of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and cannot but join the voices that have been raised in recent days to deplore the offense done to many Christians and believers of other religions. In a prestigious event where the whole world comes together around common values, there should be no allusions that ridicule the religious convictions of many people. During the much-talked-about opening ceremony, a group dance which saw 18 drag performers participating, portrayed a scene that was at the table on a boat in the River Seine with the Eiffel Tower looking down. At the center of the act, there was a woman in a low-cut dress who was wearing a large silver headcloth which alluded to the halo behind Jesus’ head in the iconic painting.
In what has been a contrary response to the outrage, the French authorities had pointed out that it wasn’t a mockery of the Christian beliefs but a simple nod to Dionysus, who was the Greek god of pleasure and wine, pointing to the ancient roots of the Summer Games.
