Venus Williams drops truth bomb about impending retirement from tennis

Former world No.1 Venus Williams has dismissed rumors about her retirement, saying she’s “not done” with tennis yet. Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, has achieved almost everything in a career that spans three decades.

At 44 years old, she has struggled with injuries recently. She hurt her knee at Wimbledon last year and was knocked out in the first round of the US Open. So far in 2024, she has only played two matches, losing to Nao Hibino in Indian Wells and Diana Shnaider in Miami.

I’m not done with the racket yet. At this point, it’s about picking and choosing places I want to be. Last year I really wanted to play in Miami – home – because I hadn’t played there in like five years. It’s nice to be in a place where I can pick and choose, but my game is always at a high level. Even if I’m not on tour, I always keep my game quite high.

Venus Williams said in an interview with Irish News

While her sister Serena Williams retired in 2022 and stars like Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal have or are about to step away this year, Venus has no plans to retire. Other players, like Richard Gasquet, are also nearing the end of their careers.

I always watch the tournaments as much as I can – it’s hard to sit in front of the TV, and a lot of times by the time I have time at like 11pm it’s a replay, but it’s still fun to watch all the competition.

Venus Williams added

Although she hasn’t been seen on the court in a while, rumors of her retiring aren’t true. Venus is currently focused on promoting her new book, Strive: 8 Steps to Train for Success. The book shares her journey of staying happy and healthy after her 2011 diagnosis of Sjögren’s syndrome.

Venus Williams discusses the impact of Serena Williams in her life

Venus Williams has spoken about the influence her sister Serena has had on both her career and personal life. While both excelled as singles players, they were also a dominant doubles team. In an interview with Virgin Radio UK, Venus was asked about the importance of having the right people around her.

I had the honor of having great company in Serena, and I learned so much from her because she was younger – she’s younger by 15 months, but still younger. She was the first in the family to win a Grand Slam, even though I was the first to be on tour. So I learned so much from her just by watching without her even saying a word. By her courage and her character and her fearlessness and I was like ‘Oh, I want that too, that’s how you win a major’.

Venus Williams said on talkSPORT

She mentioned Tiger Woods as someone who, at his peak, lacked strong rivals and had to focus on chasing history, like Jack Nicklaus and his 18 major titles. However, Venus said she never faced that issue. She was fortunate to be surrounded by greatness, as her sister Serena was by her side.

Venus described Serena as a “built-in GOAT” — not only her best friend but also the greatest female tennis player of all time. Serena’s impact was felt far and wide, inspiring the sporting world for generations. With 23 Grand Slam singles titles, Serena is second only to Margaret Court and Novak Djokovic in overall history.

Venus, who is still playing at 44, has achieved seven Grand Slam singles titles herself. Together, the Williams sisters won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion credits their sibling rivalry for pushing each other to reach new heights, something Woods didn’t have in his own journey.
