In Short
  • Venus Williams lost in the opening round at Indian Wells, citing "impossible" windy conditions as a major factor.
  • This defeat marks her continued winless streak in 2026, with her last victory occurring in 2024.
  • Grigor Dimitrov also expressed frustration over the challenging conditions after his hard-fought win in the first round.

Venus Williams’ return to Indian Wells after two years ended in disappointment as she failed to get past the opening round. The former World No.1 put a large chunk of the blame on the tricky conditions at the California desert, curtailing her game and rhythm on the court against French star Diane Parry.

Williams was making her first appearance at the Indian Wells for the first time since 2024 and was hoping to record her first win of the season. Her most recent win on tour came against Peyton Stearns in the first round of the Citi Open in Washington DC. Since then, it has been a heap of disappointment for the 45-year-old, who has shown motivation to compete at the highest level of the sport.

She began the match against Parry as the relative favorite as the French qualifier has not been at her best this year. However, it was Parry who stamped her authority on the match, winning three consecutive games to lead 5-2. After that, Williams managed to win just one game before Parry ended the first set with a forehand wild shot.

Williams kicked off the second set with a better intensity, this time around, making sure that she takes her chances. She broke the French woman immediately she was broken, forcing the match to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreak, Williams won six of the seven points after going down 1-3, which was enough to force a decider.

But in the third set, the former Wimbledon champion had no answer to Parry’s high-flying display on the court. Parry won the match 6-3, 6(4)-7, 6-1 to earn a place in the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament. After the match, Williams blamed the windy conditions for not having her best performance on the court:

Well, I don’t think today is the kind of day where you can really make an assessment. The conditions were impossible. Also, in my match in Austin, the conditions were impossible too. I’ve played the last two matches in very difficult conditions. In Austin, I refused to give in and change my game, and I lost very quickly. Today, I tried to adapt. It’s not easy. You can’t rely on anything you do out there.

Earlier this week, Novak Djokovic predicted that Serena Williams would return to the tour at the Wimbledon Championships. He also said that the 23-time Grand Slam champion will partner with Venus Williams in doubles matches. The pair has had a lot of success together, winning 14 Grand Slams.

Grigor Dimitrov laments about the conditions at the Indian Wells

Grigor Dimitrov had to dig deep to beat Frenchman Terence Atmane in the opening round of the Indian Wells Open. The former World No.3 had to navigate turbulent, windy conditions at the tournament to beat Atmane 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 after two hours and 25 minutes. The Bulgarian star booked his place in the second round.

After the match, Dimitrov acknowledged the unpredictable conditions during his win. He noted that the encounter could easily have gone the other way, but he did well to stay focused, serving deep into his opponent’s baseline and waiting for his opportunities in the difficult contest on the court:

Honestly, these conditions are horrible for playing tennis. The whole stadium looks beautiful, everything is great, the crowd is amazing, but I can’t lie, the wind has caused a lot of errors and made everything much worse. It has been very tough for both of us, especially when it comes to maintaining a certain stability throughout the match. Somehow, I knew my opportunities would come at some point; I just had to be patient and wait, not lose concentration.

Dimitrov will face Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of the Indian Wells Open. He has defeated the World No.1 twice in their last three meetings on the court, but still holds an underwhelming 2-4 lead in their head-to-head record. Meanwhile, Alcaraz will be looking to win his third title of the season at the event.
