There’s no denying the fact that Serena Williams is a living legend. So it wasn’t surprising when she won the Legend Award at the 37th edition of Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards, making Venus Williams prouder of her younger sister.
Nickelodeon presents the Legend Award to a personality whose “name is synonymous with greatness.” Williams, who ‘definitely’ comes under this category, was given the award by American singer and actress Kelly Rowland.
During her speech, Williams lauded Venus and labeled her a “legend” as well. Venus later took to her Instagram to express her pride in her sister’s achievements by writing: “Proud of you @serenawilliams.“
The Williams sisters have dominated the courts for more than two decades. They have won a combined 30 singles Grand Slam titles-Serena 23 and Venus 7. Both have topped the rankings list for the first time in 2002 and became World No.1 as a doubles team for the first time in 2010. Along with Grand Slam victories, they also added Olympic gold to their trophy cabinets.
While Serena has retired with 73 career singles titles, Venus, who has 49 singles titles to her name, has not yet said goodbye to tennis as she continues to make appearances in events. Venus last played in the first round of the 2024 Miami Open in March and lost in straight sets to Russia’s Diana Shnaider.
Serena Williams shares her wisdom to inspire kids
Serena Williams‘ story proves that with hard work and perseverance, one can achieve greatness. Nickelodeon itself said the same in a statement while describing the 23-time Grand Sam champion and how she is well respected almost everywhere. Williams also echoed the same sentiments while sharing a piece of wisdom with the kids.
This is so cool. You guys are the greatest crowd ever. I needed you all of those years at Wimbledon. I look at this crowd, filled with so many budding little legends, and I want all of you to know that no matter where you come from, and whatever your dreams are, you can achieve anything you put your mind to. If I can do it, you can do it.Serena Williams said after receiving the Legend Award
Apart from Williams, legends from other sports like David Beckham, Derek Jeter, Michael Phelps, the late Kobe Bryant, Danica Patrick, and Dwyane Wade have also received the award. Williams became the first tennis player to take home the award.
