WTA pro Veronika Kudermetova has made a surprising revelation about Holger Rune. The Dane wanted to have a romantic relationship with the World No.42 but was rejected because of her marital status.

Rune and Kudermetova are in Toronto and Montreal, respectively, for the combined WTA and ATP Masters 1000 event- the Canadian Open. The Russian ace knocked out Spain’s Cristina Bucsa to schedule a second-round match against Serbia’s Olga Danilovic.

She recently sat for an interview with fellow former doubles No.1 Elena Vesnina. During that interview, she recalled the text exchange with Rune.

And I say, ‘Boy, I’m probably too old for you.’ I say, ‘If you watched my Instagram, I have a husband.’ After that, he stopped.

Kudermetova is married to coach Sergei Demekhine, also a former tennis player. Rune is currently dating Caroline Donzella, an Italian-Dutch model.

Kudermetova hasn’t yet won a singles title this season, with her last singles title being the 2023 Pan Pacific Open. In doubles, however, she and Elise Mertens defeated Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei to win the Wimbledon title.

Apart from Wimbledon, the pair has also made it to the final of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. The Wimbledon title is the only Grand Slam doubles title she has won in her career.

The Canadian Open is her first tournament since that Wimbledon triumph. She is also playing doubles with Mertens, and the fourth seeds will be kick-starting their campaign against Beatriz Haddad Maia and Laura Siegemund.

Holger Rune explains the reason behind hiring fitness trainer Marco Panichi

Holger Rune will be working with Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner‘s former fitness trainer, Marco Panichi. Rune told Ziggo Sport that he had trained with Panichi in Monaco, which was quite challenging for him.

It was not only about getting stronger, lifting weights, because that’s not what tennis is about. Obviously, you need a certain strength, but it’s a lot about the coordination, the biomechanics, and I think he challenged me in a different way that I haven’t tried before.

Before joining the 22-year-old’s team, Panichi was in the World No.1’s entourage, but Sinner fired him as well as physio Ulises Badio just a few days before Wimbledon. Djokovic split with Panichi in 2024, and Sinner hired him after parting ways with Umberto Ferrara, whom he has surprisingly re-hired again after the split with Panichi.

And obviously his experience working so many years with Novak and a little time with Sinner…I really see the connection between fitness and tennis, and I think he has a spectacular talent for that, so I’m very excited to work with him.

Rune wanted to kick-start his campaign in North America at the Citi Open, but he withdrew from the tournament. In Toronto, the World No.9 will be meeting Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his opening round.

Rune is searching for his second title of the season after his Barcelona Open win. He clinched the title by beating five-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

Rune’s doubles experience includes a second-round appearance at the 2022 US Open. Anisimova has played three Grand Slam doubles events. It’s Wimbledon, where she hasn’t yet played doubles.

But in singles, she is a finalist at SW19. She is in Montreal for the Canadian Open, where the fifth seed will kick-start her campaign against Lulu Sun. Before the Canadian Open, she lost 6-0, 6-0 in the Wimbledon final against Iga Swiatek.
