American tennis player Coco Gauff has been at the receiving end of backlash for crying as she fails to advance into the semi-finals round of the WTA Finals 2022 tournament. After giving away a needed lead to Daria Kasatkina on Thrusday, the 18-years old’s hopes of reaching the semifinals got shattered, much to the disappointment of her viewers.

The Russian, whose finest Grand Slam performance this year was a run to the semifinals at the French Open back in June, got off to a sluggish start against the American, who finished second in Roland Garros as she fell behind 4-1. However, Kasatkina started to target Gauff’s weaker side more often, and this paid off.

Kasatkina promptly won five out of six games to take the lead at 6-5, which was the score when Gauff wiped away tears during a changeover. However, Eminent sports journalist Jose Morgado pointed out that Coco Gauff began crying when the score was tied at 5-5 in the tie-breaker set. He took to social media to share his opinion on the matter.

After holding off Kasatkina’s first two set points, Gauff gave in and sent a forehand into the net to end a 24-stroke exchange. The 18-year-old was earlier defeated by Caroline Garcia, 6-4, 6-3. As Kasatkina and Garcia compete for the final semifinal slot from the Tracy Austin Group, the American will now face the top seed and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in a match.

Swiatek has two victories under her belt and has already qualified for the knockout stages.

Coco Gauff was looking good in the first half of the game. She mounted pressure on Daria Kasatkina and was even able to earn a 4-1 lead in the first set of the match. However, she squandered the lead and gave the Russian the perfect time to get back into the game.

This was the maiden WTA Finals tournament she was playing in her career. She fell into tears as she has been knocked out of the singles and doubles of the WTA Finals. She along with Jessica Pegula lost both of their matches in the WTA Finals doubles event.

The American pair lost their first match against the all-Chinese pair of Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan in the tie-breaker set. They lost their second match against the Dutch-American pair of Demi Schuurs-Desirae Krawczyk yet again in the tie-breaker set. They will play next against the all-Czech pair of Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková.

Twitter, however, is not in the mood to release Coco Gauff so easily. While the majority of the commenters slammed her for his unmature behaviour, a few even poked fun at her. Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here are a few reactions coming in.

However, there were a few users who did sympathize with her and hoped she will do better in the coming years.
