Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was upset that his team allowed the Kansas City Chiefs to score even those 22 points during garbage time in the historic Super Bowl triumph. Although the Eagles dominated the game, sacking Patrick Mahomes a career-high six times, Fangio was not pleased with his defensive line.
In one of the most one-sided Super Bowls ever, Kansas City failed to score for nine straight drives, trailing 34-0 midway through the third quarter. While Kansas City eventually found some rhythm, scoring 22 points, it was too little, too late, as the Eagles secured a decisive 40-22 win. Despite this impressive victory, Fangio’s high standards and pursuit of perfection led him to critique his defense’s performance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining excellence throughout the game.
In a meeting held just before the Super Bowl parade, Eagles linebacker Jalyx Hunt recounted how Fangio reviewed the game with the defense, focusing on areas for improvement. The defensive coordinator delivered stern feedback regarding the defense’s inability to maintain their high level of play throughout the entire game against Kansas City.
This is unacceptable. Circles the 2nd half. Unacceptable 22 points … They didn’t score in the first half. We’re having a meeting after the Super Bowl. He wants perfection.
Hunt, recalling what Fangio saying
Jalyx Hunt says that even after the Super Bowl, after a team meeting going over parade-prep, Vic Fangio made the defense stay back after to go over the game: “He gets to the 2nd half, and he says ‘This is unacceptable. Unacceptable. 22 points.’ He wants perfection.”

Although the Chiefs managed to score 22 points, most of their scoring occurred in the fourth quarter when the Eagles had already established a commanding lead. Even as they generated some offense in the final minutes, they failed to establish a consistent rhythm, and the game’s outcome was never truly in doubt.
Vic Fangio’s high standards transform Eagles into NFL powerhouse
Even though Fangio is hard on his defensive line– as it seems almost unnecessary to criticize where they lacked when they produced one of the best defensive performances; the man is known for his perfectionist reputation. He’s the one who transformed Philly’s one of the worst-ranked defenses into the best in 2024.
The linebacker also revealed that under Fangio, rookies are held to the same standards as veteran players, with no excuses or time for adjusting to the NFL. This rigorous expectation of excellence contributes significantly to the team’s success, after all, Hunt also absorbed a vast amount of football knowledge from this during his rookie season.

Before Super Bowl LIX, the Eagles’ social media team featured Fangio answering some fan questions. Unsurprisingly, his straightforward and uncompromising personality shone through as he discarded issues that he preferred not to address. But for the sake of Eagles’ fans, he did give them a glimpse into his coaching approach and philosophy.
