Victor Wembanyama entered his third NBA season with the clear motivation to prove to the world that he is what his pre-rookie season hype made him out to be.

Last season, he had some good duels, but was not close to the dominating self many felt he could be. After all, there are not many 7′ 4″ players with that skill level and understanding of the game.

The 21-year-old has grown a few inches over the offseason. With that length, his defensive capabilities are already through the roof, as players routinely avoid attempts from near the rim.

Cooper Flagg understood it well and clearly on his debut when the center blocked his layup with ease. That defensive performance, along with his offensive output, embarrassed the Dallas Mavericks.

Draymond Green once mentioned that the Frenchman is the clear Defensive Player of the Year candidate, as Wembanyama alters his opponents’ shot selection even if he does not get his hands on the ball.

In Game 3, the lanky star’s dual-threat capabilities were again on full display. Late in the second quarter, Brooklyn Nets forward Noah Clowney tried to lay the ball into the basket.

Noticing Victor Wembanyama was lurking underneath the rim, he threw it up high to avoid the center. But the Spurs star managed to get his fingertips on it.

Then, as Terance Mann rebounded the ball and tried to lay it up again, Wemby, as he is known around the league, regained his composure and jumped to block it again.

After a third attempt clanked off the rim and into the hands of Spurs star Julian Champagnie, he passed it to his tallest teammate, who dribbled down the floor and pulled up from just beyond the logo to score.

Fans lose their minds watching Victor Wembanyama dominate on both ends

In that sequence, fans watched Victor Wembanyama erase two Brooklyn Nets’ scoring opportunities and then add insult to injury by scoring on the other end.

Many felt as if they were witnessing the birth of a real unicorn. The NBA has had unicorns before, but none who have the all-round impact of a player who spends his off-time buried in books.

Fans believe they are watching a generational run from the most hyped-up prospect to come through in the past decade. Check out examples of those reactions below:

Victor Wembanyama ended the night with 31 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 blocks. That was enough to help his San Antonio Spurs take the joint lead of the Western Conference after 3 games.

Victor Wembanyama sets NBA record in third win of the season

This happens to be the third game in succession that Victor Wembanyama has scored 29 points or more. His 31 points in this game bring his season points tally to 100.

On top of that, his 6 blocks in this game bring his per-game average to 6 per game, 3.5 more than the next player. His 18 total stops, along with his points tally, make Wembanyama the first player ever to notch 100 points and 15+ blocks in their first 3 games of the season.

If this continues, a lot of records could tumble at the hands of the Paris Olympics silver medalist. More importantly, the San Antonio Spurs could become a serious threat to the current Western Conference’s established order.
