NBA and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama
Entering this NBA season, one of the most anticipated moments will be when Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James steps on to the court to play alongside his father LeBron James. But many fans are players are looking forward to the next step San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama takes.
With his already elaborate skill set at hand, last season many asked him to gain some weight. Some rumors of weight and muscle gain are already spreading like wildfire. With that in mind, French reporters waited for the superstar to emerge from practice.
They asked him if the rumors of him gaining 25lbs in the offseason were true. A fan translated his answers and shared them on the NBA’s Reddit sub.
Wembanyama denies rumors about him gaining 25lbs this season: “No, impossible [to gain that much weight] in 12 months without getting injured. […] We try to aim between 1 and 5% per year in weight gain.”

Another French reporter informed him that that his current weight is 106 kgs (or 235lbs), whereas his weight after the NBA Draft was 95kg or 210lbs. This caught him by surprise, but he reiterated that it wasn’t possible.
Victor Wembanyama was defiant in his stance that he did not gain weight to the extent that is rumored. As for such an increase, he would need to be injured, suggesting that no activities and food consumption could lead to such an increase. But he did mention that weight training must have had an impact.
Victor Wembanyama’s progress will show against Mavericks
To start his second season in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs will face the Dallas Mavericks. The game will tip off on Thursday, the 24th when the phenom will go up against a pair of athletic big men.
Both Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II have good agility in the post, but also can defend the post decently. Going up against the pair will be a good test to the development the Frenchman has had this offseason. As a team, their collective efforts against the NBA Finalists will also show how much they will need to work on their game.
If fans of the game do find some interesting takeaways, it will be enough to get an idea how the season would go. Towards the end of last season, Victor Wembanyama was on a tear. Now with Olympic basketball experience and a desire to improve, the Mavericks might have to keep him at bay.
