Victor Wembanyama gets real about ‘Face of The NBA’ shouts: “This is not way to approach things”
Spurs Victor Wembanyama opened up about his fresh approach to the 'face of the league' responsibility in the future.
Victor Wembanyama reacted to being the 'face of the league'
Victor Wembanyama was one of the most hyped prospects at the time of his draft. The league and fans had high expectations for the 7’4″ center with incredible shooting skills. But the French went beyond everyone’s vision and delivered a remarkable debut season. From then on Wemby has been surprising the viewers with his capabilities, earning the title of ‘future face of the league’. But the star has a different way of approaching his given title.
NBA greats such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant have been the representatives of the league for a long time. As times are changing, Victor Wembanyama is among the few names who are considered for that responsibility in the future. While Wemby sat with ESPN, the star opened up about his humble approach to the responsible opportunity.
It seems that Wemby has bigger goals than just being the face. The Spurs center is not interested in directly chasing the ‘greatest player’ title. Wemby wants to build his career ‘brick-by-brick’ by putting efforts into his improvement. The star is keeping ‘working hard’ as his motivation rather than the positive consequences of his actions.
"I'd embrace it for sure [being the face of the NBA]. … [but] this is not the way to approach things – thinking about becoming the greatest of all-time. I approach things [by] making sure I'm the guy in the NBA today that works the hardest."

Wemby is seemingly sticking by his statement as the star is certainly working hard after winning Rookie of the Year. The 21-year-old has upped his play this season, leading to a ‘most improved player’ buzz. Wemby’s stats this season are better than the previous, averaging 24.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 4.0 blocks per game. After the snub last year for DPOY honors, Wemby might also win that award.
Victor Wembanyama’s teammate called him ‘wise beyond his years’
The San Antonio Spurs are currently in France for the NBA’s Paris contests. Even the ESPN interview was arranged for the same event. Coming back to his home country, Wemby has taken all the responsibility of his teammates trip. After attending the PSG vs. Mancity champions league game, the Spurs center is not leaving his teammates behind.
Wemby’s teammate and veteran Chris Paul had high praise for the star for his nature. The point god opened up about his Wemby’s knowledge beyond basketball and his giving personality. Bearing in mind the age gap between the teammates, CP3 was impressed by Wembanyama’s maturity. Paul talked about the first overall pick as the team’s guide to Paris in the press conference.

Wembanyama’s admission about the ‘face of the league’ is certainly a reflection of Paul’s statement. Despite being a young, inexperienced player Wemby took charge of the team quite early. The star once even called out older players for their work ethic showcasing his responsible character.
