The San Antonio Spurs will need a repeat of Victor Wembanyama's Game 6 performance that helped them tie the Western Conference Finals.

In Short
  • Victor Wembanyama's performance in Game 7 is crucial for the San Antonio Spurs' chances against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
  • Brian Windhorst compares Wembanyama's situation to LeBron James' in 2007, highlighting the pressure on the young star.
  • Paul Pierce believes a championship win would elevate Wembanyama into the GOAT conversation as he becomes a central figure in the NBA.

With Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals on the horizon, the pressure is on both Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to lead their respective teams into the championship round.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are the defending champions, which means they have both the experience and the know-how to tweak their game as per the needs of the hour.

The San Antonio Spurs, on the other hand, have no playoff experience to speak of. Other than veterans Harrison Barnes, Luke Kornet, and De’Aaron Fox, nearly every other player getting on the floor is new to this situation.

Wembanyama, in particular, used his loss to SGA in the regular-season MVP stakes as motivation in Game 1. But since then, he has had three poor games and two where he performed well. In Game 7, it has to be the Frenchman who has to rise above all if the Spurs are to win.

This is reminiscent to me of LeBron James in 2007 going up against the Spurs. The Spurs beating him, and Tim Duncan saying, ‘This league is going to be yours someday.’ But happily taking his title. I think the Thunder would happily take this victory but acknowledge that the Victor Wembanyama machine is now churning.

Brian Windhorst said on Get Up

The ESPN senior writer believes that the Oklahoma City Thunder’s experience will probably get them over the hump. But even if they do, they will likely have to acknowledge that the Spurs phenom is about to dominate the league going forward, just like the Spurs did back when they faced LeBron James.

Former champion claims Victor Wembanyama going off will seal series

Talking about the pressure on Victor Wembanyama to perform, former champion Richard Jefferson believes that the center has to step up his game.

He’s a Shaq, he’s a Bron, he’s a Steph from three. When he gets going, we’re all watching. I’m as helpless sitting on my couch as the defenders on the court… So if Wemby gives you one of those, I think the Spurs win. I don’t see the scenario… when Wemby goes 18, 12, and 5 blocks and Spurs win.

Richard Jefferson said on the Road Trippin’ Show

Essentially, Jefferson does not see the Spurs winning if their most important player fails to score 30 points or more. Anything less, and the Oklahoma City Thunder will win.

However, if Wembanyama does indeed get 30 points or more, there is no chance that the defending champions will be able to retain their crown. Once he gets into those numbers, not only do his teammates step up, but the Thunder cannot match them.

Paul Pierce feels Victor Wembanyama will be on GOAT trajectory with title

If Wembanyama were to help win Game 7 and move on to the NBA Finals, Paul Pierce believes the Spurs star will set himself up to be talked about in the GOAT trajectory.

Because if Wemby is everything we brought him up to be, from the time we was watching videos of him in France, to when he came here as a rookie,… if he wins these finals, you know what the conversations is going to be?… It’s going to be like, okay, he’s on pace… We got another guy that can chase LeBron and Jordan.

Paul Pierce said on No Fouls Given

The Hall of Famer believes that winning a title will place the 22-year-old at the center of any discussion regarding the NBA. As LeBron James and other veterans start to slowly leave the game, the lanky center will be the most talked-about superstar in the league.
