After an opening round victory against Clervie Ngounoue, former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka faced eighth seed Qinwen Zheng in her next round match at the 2025 Indian Wells. After losing the first set 3-6 to Zheng, Azarenka was serving at 4-4, 30-30 in the second set.

During the rally, the Belarusian came close to the net, and Zheng tried to lob her. As Azarenka ran back to fire up a return, she had a close look at the ball bouncing and believed it was out.

Victoria Azarenka immediately put her hand up in anticipation that the shot would be called out, but, to her dismay, it was called in. She was furious over the call and argued the decision with the chair umpire Marija Cicak. However, with electronic line calling in use, it meant she couldn’t challenge.

The two-time former champion in Indian Wells went on a rant about the “sh*tty f******’ electronic system” and was slapped with a code violation. She quickly got broken and lost the match to Qinwen Zheng 6-3, 6-4.

Female tennis players now eligible for 12 months paid maternity leave

Victoria Azarenka, who is a member of the WTA Players’ Council, played a key role recently in initiating a maternity fund for women players in partnership with WTA. This program is sponsored by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

On Thursday, it was announced that more than 320 Hologic WTA Tour players can access paid maternity leave for up to 12 months and paid parental leave for up to two months for those who become parents via partner pregnancy, surrogacy, or adoption. It also provides grants for egg and embryo freezing and IVF treatment.

Two time Grand Slam champion, Azarenka became a mother in 2016 when she gave birth to her son, Leo. At that time, there were no programs or policies supporting women athletes starting a family. With the creation of the PIF WTA Maternity Fund Program, Azarenka now has that guided path she has long advocated for as the chair of the WTA Players’ Council.

Many women tennis players and other people from the fraternity lauded this groundbreaking step taken by Azarenka in partnership with PIF and WTA. This pioneering initiative marks the first time in women’s sports that a comprehensive range of maternity benefits is being made available to independent, self-employed athletes.
