Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her US Open crown with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Amanda Anisimova in the final. The Belarusian had fallen thrice in her Grand Slam hunt so far in 2025, but finally turned up under the New York Lights.

This was the third consecutive American she played in the US Open final. She has now beaten Jessica Pegula and Anisimova in the New York final after falling short against Coco Gauff in 2023. After the final, she celebrated emotionally with her team. The biggest highlight of the celebration was her boyfriend, who she delivered an emotional kiss.

Sabalenka had the chance to end the match early when she served for the match at 5-4. However, she blew a smash at 30/30 to give her opponent a break point, which she took.

However, she remained firm in the tiebreak. This was the 19th consecutive tiebreak she won, the most in the Open Era.

Aryna Sabalenka defends US Open crown

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka claimed her fourth Grand Slam title with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Amanda Anisimova in the US Open final. The win made her the first woman since Serena Williams in 2014 to successfully defend the trophy in New York. It also marked her first major title of the season after holding the No. 1 spot in the PIF WTA Rankings throughout the year.

Her consistency at the top level has been remarkable. Over the past three seasons, she has entered 11 Grand Slams and produced elite results. The tally includes four titles, three additional finals, three semifinals, and one quarterfinal appearance.

This latest triumph gave her a pair of US Open titles to go along with two at the Australian Open. That mirrors Naomi Osaka’s stretch of success from 2018 to 2021, though Sabalenka achieved the feat in a shorter time span. Her ability to thrive across surfaces continues to set her apart.

The victory also carried symbolic weight. It was Sabalenka’s 100th Grand Slam match win, achieved with an impressive .794 winning percentage. Among active players, only Iga Swiatek has a stronger record, placing the Belarusian firmly among the game’s most dominant competitors.

How Aryna Sabalenka got the better of Amanda Anisimova?

Amanda Anisimova entered the US Open final with a 6-3 record against Aryna Sabalenka, but this meeting had a different feel. Known for her clean hitting and aggressive style, Anisimova usually forces Sabalenka back behind the baseline. This time, though, she struggled with errors under constant pressure. She finished with 29 unforced errors to only 22 winners, while the World No.1 played a steadier game with 13 winners and 15 errors. Crucially, the top seed converted five of six break points.

The match began with echoes of Anisimova’s Wimbledon loss. She quickly fell behind 0-2 after a shaky forehand error and soon trailed 3-1. Although she managed to settle with strong serving and even broke Sabalenka, the advantage didn’t last. Serving at 3-4, Anisimova double-faulted to hand the Belarusian break chances, and a loose backhand sealed the first set 6-3. History suggested this was decisive — 28 of the past 30 US Open champions had taken the opener.

In the second set, Anisimova showed resilience. She fought back from 1-3 to level at 3-all, but Sabalenka immediately regained control with another break. At 5-4, the defending champion was two points from victory when Anisimova struck back, breaking serve and then holding to push the contest to its limit. Her opponent, however, steadied herself to force a tiebreak.

The tiebreak unfolded much like her season. Sabalenka had won 20 of 21 breakers in 2024, and her composure carried her through again. On her third match point, Anisimova missed a return, sealing Sabalenka’s straight-sets win. The result underscored the top seed’s ability to adapt, stay patient, and close out big matches with authority.
