Djokovic struggled with his serve, hitting a career-high 14 double faults in a Grand Slam match. Four of those double faults came in the fourth set, giving Popyrin a crucial double break. Though the Canadian Masters winner was broken while trying to serve out the match, he managed to close it two games later.

This upset followed another surprise at Arthur Ashe Stadium, where World No. 74 Botic van de Zandschulp defeated 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. Popyrin’s victory ended Djokovic’s quest for his 25th Grand Slam men’s singles title and his 100th career title.

For the 25-year-old Popyrin, this has been a memorable August. Earlier in the month, he won the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal, defeating five Top 20 players. This victory lifted him to a career-high No. 23 in the ATP rankings.
