The past few seasons of the NFL have seen more and more players speaking about their faith and spirituality. Amongst the same are players like Brock Purdy, Harrison Butker, and Baker Mayfield, apparently.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has never shied away from speaking about his faith. As he navigates his NFL career, he continues to emphasize the importance of his spiritual journey. He has previously admitted that his beliefs have shaped his personal and professional life in ways that go beyond the game.
Recently, Mayfield joined Sports Spectrum to discuss his faith and how it has influenced his outlook on life. He shared personal challenges that made him reflect on his identity beyond football. According to him, the struggles he faced led him to rediscover the deeper meaning of his existence.
Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is grace, perfection. Somebody that sacrificed everything, that gave us this opportunity to live life.
Baker Mayfield said
Mayfield went on to reveal that early in his career, he focused only on football, neglecting other aspects of his life. The quarterback explained how his career was “stripped down” to its core, forcing him to rebuild not only as a player but as a person. He credited his renewed faith with giving him strength and helping him embrace grace in every part of his life.
[God] had to take my career down to the studs and make me realize I am more than a football player. There’s much more going on than the game of football. For me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom.

Baker Mayfield admits the birth of his daughter has shifted his mindset for the better
Baker Mayfield also admitted how becoming a father has deepened his faith. He believes that his spiritual and emotional growth will extend into the locker room, allowing him to lead by example both on and off the field.

In the same interview, he also opened up on his tough guy exterior and how his daughter opened up the softer side in him. Baker Mayfield and his wife Emily Mayfield welcomed their first child, Kova Mayfield, last year in mid-April.
I’ve always had a softer, more sensitive side. I was really close to my mom growing up. But, you know, when you get into football culture, you’re trying to be the tough guy. You try to bury that part of yourself down. It’s just the man’s ego.
Baker Mayfield stated
Furthermore, he also highlighted how his daughter’s birth made him believe in pure love. After all, there’s literally a selection of multiple reels on Instagram of him playing with her on and off the field.
I mean, I think when you’re trying to have kids, or your significant other is pregnant, everybody’s like, ‘Just wait until you see that child for the first time.’ You hear it so many times, and you think, ‘Yeah, I get it.’ But then the first time I saw her, I was like—okay, now I understand it. This is what that pure love is. It just turned our world upside down. It’s so special.
Baker Mayfield added
