The New Orleans Saints have been bitten by the injury bug. After quarterback Derek Carr’s oblique injury has him sidelined for a few games, the team has now lost wide receiver Chris Olave after he took a brutal hit just three plays into the game.

The wide receiver was ruled out of the game after he was confirmed to have a concussion. Chris Olave was able to walk off after taking the hit. He was taken into the medical tent where he was evaluated for a concussion, and was later taken to the locker room and ruled out of the game.

The referees did not throw a flag on the Chris Olave play

The hit on Chris Olave deserved to have been penalized for unnecessary roughness, however, the referees did not view that the hit warranted a flag thrown. The play was reviewed by referee Clete Blakeman but he limited his review to examine if Olave had completed the catch before he was stripped or not. This led the New Orleans Saints to rely on Alvin Kamara, Jamaal Williams, Foster Moreau, Juwan Johnson, and Bub Means to run their offense.

The Saints are likely to place the wide receiver in concussion protocol which would mean he will be absent for an indefinite period. Rookie QB Spencer Rattler had a respectable first game. He threw for 243 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. Despite being short-staffed on offense, he helped the team put up 27 points on the board.

However, despite Rattler’s efforts, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers steamrolled the Saints on offense. Baker Mayfield had 3 interceptions tonight but threw for 325 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Bucs put up 51 points on the Saints, more than enough to beat them on their home turf.
