Daniil Medvedev didn’t expect to be shocked by 23-year-old Kasidit Samrej in the first round of the Australian Open, the tournament where he played the finals three times. On Tuesday (January 14), during a tense moment, Medvedev failed to control his emotions, as a consequence of which he hit the net multiple times.
Medvedev won the first set but the World No. 418 surprised the crowd inside the Rod Laver Arena by beating the Russian 6-4, 6-3 in the next two sets. It was during the third set that Medvedev completely lost his cool.
5-3 read the scores when, during a crucial rally, the net changed the direction of the ball, as a result of which the Russian lost a point. He flew into a rage and smashed the camera on the net amidst loud boos from the crowd.

Medvedev then regained momentum and restricted Samrej to just one game in the fourth set and to two games in the fifth to win the match with scores of 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. He has now set to himself a second-round clash with America’s Learner Tien, and it will be their first meeting on the tour.
Daniil Medvedev lauds Kasidit Samrej after avoiding upset
Daniil Medvedev had watched Kasidit Samrej’s matches before, but he didn’t expect the Thai ace to play a high level of tennis against him. During the second and third set, the 2021 US Open champion struggled to keep the momentum and his 17 unforced errors only made things harder for him.
Following the match, the 28-year-old lauded Samrej who became just the third player from Thailand to feature in men’s singles in a Grand Slam tournament.
Had Samrej won that match, he would have become the lowest-ranked ATP player to knock out a player from the Top 5. The player from Thailand had never played a match against a player higher than 78th before the clash with Medvedev.
