Former President Donald Trump came to Detroit to rally and invited a local legend on stage. Huntington Place in downtown Detroit hosted the three-time Republican presidential candidate. Before taking the stage, he posed for a photo with Detroit native and boxing legend Thomas “Hitman” Hearns.

Trump then spotted Hearns in the audience and invited him to the stage. Tommy Hearns eventually joined the pre-election GOP Nominee. Donald Trump has maintained a general concord with MMA fighters and boxers; even the UFC roster. UFC CEO Dana White also credits the then-Trump Organization umbrella brand for boosting the brass with venues when nobody else would. Now, the 78-year-old takes his fighter association further than namedropping Jorge Masvidal or Kamaru Usman.

I won so much money betting on this guy. … Some of the greatest fights in history, …One of the greatest fights of all time, and man, I’ll tell you what, he was something special.

Thomas Hearns eventually joined Trump on the podium to shake on and seemed in delight at the praise. He boxed pro from 1977 to 2006, becoming the first boxer to win five weight-class world titles. He did so in six — welterweight, light middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, and cruiserweight. Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao have since joined him in the feat.

Trump has had a strong and unique link with boxers before. For example, Ryan Garcia threw his support when America’s 46th prez stepped aside as the Democratic presidential nominee. But Hearns ( 61-5-1) marks a familiarity with an age and ode to the classics gone by. He fought his last title victory for the vacant IBO cruiserweight in 1999, and finally in 2006; Trump was there for much of it.

Thomas Hearns’ appearance on stage with Donald Trump has stunned many. While some fans were delighted to see the boxing legend, others were worried about the 66-year-old’s health. He was struggling to speak while on stage — Hearns’ alleged CTE, in recent years has been a big topic indeed.

To perform the way he did he did against Marvin Hagler in 1985 (round-three technical knockout) and “Sugar Ray” was one for ages. Hence, whatever minimal interaction and the delight the boxer took out of it was quite the happenstance. For Trump though, he is just a maverick in combat sports culture these days.

Case in point – opposing side, Kamala Harris gets no respite as Donald Trump’s UFC Support takes another turn. Florida-based American Top Team recently took to their X account to slyly mock Harris. American entrepreneur and Valuetainment host Patrick Bet-David also claims veteran podcaster Joe Rogan, while not an ardent Trump supporter, denied requests from her PR team to rig questions recently.

A lot in the boxing sphere also supports Trump and his model. That and his aura have made its mark since the old days. This is not Trump’s first meeting with Hearn. In 1990, Trump stole the spotlight from the 66-year-old during a press conference for Hearns’ fight with Michael Olajide at Atlantic City’s Taj Mahal Casino Hotel. This was right around filing for Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code for his Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts company.

He has also maintained some monikers of friendship with big names like Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali. “Iron” Mike and his pro-Trump touting has been viral these few years. All in all, Trump just shines brighter and brighter in the combat sports sphere.
