Young NBA stars from different colleges wait in much anticipation for the epic NBA draft every year. Throughout the year, players are picked according to their stats and performances, determining which youngsters will be picked up in what order. That said, fans as well as teams wait in anticipation regarding the top picks in the NBA draft as to where they would land once the draft unfolds.
Notably, Dylan Harper, son of Ron Harper, was picked as the number 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs. One would say that the Spurs were lucky regarding the NBA draft lottery as they got the number 2 pick, snatching up Harper in the process. The Spurs signed the Rutgers guard on a $56 million rookie deal.
Harper seemed unable to comprehend the enormous sum in front of him when he signed his first NBA contract, according to a video that the Spurs made public. See his fantastic response below:

I’m feeling blessed and happy to be a part of the organization. From the time when I put the jersey up to when I shook Adam Silver’s hand to now, it’s all been surreal.

Interestingly, this rookie deal speaks volumes about how the sport has evolved. A few years ago, youngsters like Harper weren’t making as much as what the current Spurs rookie will be earning. With the NIL(Name, Image, Likeness) playing a part in these players’ earnings, much has evolved since then. In addition, Harper was going toe-to-toe with the number one overall pick, Cooper Flagg.
However, Flagg edged him by a slight margin, leading to him being the number one pick as the Dallas Mavericks signed him in the NBA draft.

As for Harper, he averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and four assists per game as a freshman at Rutgers the previous season. Now, sharing the court with French phenom Victor Wembanyama surely excites him and also the Spurs fans. That said, Harper also featured in the ongoing summer league with his Spurs side, where he featured in two games and scored 16 points in each match.
NBA analyst makes interesting case on Dylan Harper
The Spurs’ No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper has a special skillset to him, which makes him different than the other players in today’s generation. He has a similar way of playing to the Spurs legend Manu Ginobili, where he gets himself slow but then speeds up quickly, where he can pull back, pivot, and sidestep his way into whichever spot he wants to.
This skill has also piqued the interest of many NBA analysts, one of them being Bryce Simon of the Game Theory Podcast. Simon opened up on this and made an interesting case on Harper.
I love the nuance that he plays with… the handle he has to navigate defenders, he uses eye manipulation on his passes, he changes direction… he’s ready for the counter move when the defense throws something at him.
Bryce Simon on the Game Theory Podcast
The abilities Ginobili employed to dominate the game while he was on the court are remarkably comparable to everything Simon mentioned about Harper here. For this reason, starting the season with him off the bench would be a good plan for the rookie.
Harper was consistently regarded as having one of the best draft values and ceilings in the class. Now, with the Spurs picking him as the No.2 overall pick, it is up to the rookie to showcase his value and skill set in the upcoming season.
Dylan Harper made a bold claim regarding his father, Ron Harper
To get selected as the number 2 overall pick in the NBA draft, one has to be confident, talented, and bold. It’s safe to say that this year’s No. 2 pick, Dylan Harper, possesses all these traits. So much so that, after being selected as a No. 2 pick, Harper was interviewed by NBA journalist Taylor Rooks. During his interview, the Spurs rookie made a bold claim regarding his father, Ron Harper, on live TV.
Dylan Harper was questioned by Rooks on whether he was superior to his father in any manner.
Everything.
Dylan Harper replied

The Rutgers standout made it apparent that he was superior to his father in terms of defense, playmaking, and ball shooting. His athleticism is the only area where he falls short of his father, a five-time winner. His father could jump higher, he acknowledged. Only time will tell how good the Spurs rookie will prove to be.
