LeBron and Savannah James reflect following Bronny’s cardiac arrest in Netflix’s Starting 5.
Last season saw LeBron James and his wife Savannah face a terrifying moment when their son Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest during a workout at USC. The ordeal was recounted in an episode of Netflix’s Starting 5 docuseries, which showed how the family dealt with the sad situation.
In the documentary, an episode showed LeBron James taking his mother Gloria to meet the USC medical staff who helped save Bronny’s life. It also featured Erin, a staff member who performed CPR during the emergency.
I think at the end of the day, it was just about us supporting each other and being super grateful for the outcome.
Savannah James said on the Netflix docuseries
LeBron then praised the USC staff and thanked them for saving his son, who he said was now doing fine and enjoying life.
Shoutout to the man above. To the whole coaching staff, training staff, members of the [USC] program… They’re the reason Bronny is alive now and smiling, and thriving, and doing what any 19-year-old should be doing and that’s living out their dream.

After the incident, Bronny James was unfortunately diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, which required medical intervention before he could safely return to the basketball court. Following his freshman year at USC, he declared for the 2024 NBA draft and was selected by the Lakers in the second round as he joined his father as his teammate.
Bronny’s return to basketball was marked by solid performances at USC, where he averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. Now with the Lakers, he has struggled with his offensive output but his defensive contributions has received praise from head coach JJ Redick.
ESPN analyst opens up on Bronny James’ future in the league
It’s fair to say that Bronny James’ presence in the Lakers this season has generated a fair bit of interest in the preseason, with media and fans closely watching his performances. He then made history when he appeared together with his father against the Phoenix Suns.
However, the critics are as loud as the supporters. Experienced ESPN analyst Tim MacMahon gave his thoughts on Bronny’s Lakers move and opined how the youngster can make this work in his favor.
Frankly, I hope that Bronny gets to the G League early on and is able to have kind of as routine as possible of a rookie season for a 55th overall pick as he can. He’s a developmental project right now. It’s a cool story, but it can also turn into a difficult situation because of the spotlight.
Tim MacMahon said on the Hoop Collective podcast
The decision is fully in Bronny’s hands and with that being said, the Lakers’ preseason continues with games against the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, and Phoenix Suns to come. The regular season begins on October 22, when the Lakers host the Minnesota Timberwolves.
