Iga Swiatek, the No. 2 seed, advanced to the third round of the 2025 US Open after a hard-fought win. She overcame Dutch qualifier Suzan Lamens 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, showing resilience after dropping the second set.

Her post-match press conference, however, became as talked about as the match itself. A reporter asked if she had “thought about beads in her hair,” which left Swiatek visibly annoyed. She dismissed the question, expressing surprise and frustration at its irrelevance. Swiatek replied to the reporter:

What kind of a question is that? No… what is going on here, what sort of a question was that?

Clips of the exchange quickly spread across social media. Fans reacted with a mix of confusion and amusement, debating the odd nature of the question.

The moment sparked criticism of the reporter, with many suggesting that given the chance to question a top player, such a comment should not be the priority. The fact that it came from a fellow Polish journalist added another layer to the reaction.

Suzan Lamens pushes Iga Swiatek at the US Open

Suzan Lamens is a late bloomer on the WTA Tour, only breaking into the Grand Slam main draws this year at the age of 26. Her clash with Iga Swiatek marked just her third career meeting with a Top 10 opponent.

Over the past year, she has shown steady progress, highlighted by her first Top 10 win over Jelena Ostapenko in Billie Jean King Cup play and a breakthrough title run in Osaka as a qualifier. Her rise has taken her from No. 121 to inside the Top 70.

Although outplayed in the opening set against Swiatek, Lamens began to showcase her best weapons in the second. She used a heavy topspin forehand to attack different angles, complemented by well-timed drop shots. Her backhand lob stood out, earning her a key break at 2-2 with one of the finest shots of the match.

As the contest wore on, Lamens adjusted to Swiatek’s power and started pulling her into long exchanges. She fought back from a break down at 4-3, winning a grueling 22-shot rally that signaled a shift in momentum. Swiatek’s frustration began to show, and the pressure forced her into mistakes.

Two double faults from the world No. 2 handed Lamens another break, and soon after, an error-filled service game from Swiatek leveled the match. What began as a routine-looking contest had suddenly turned into a genuine battle, with Lamens pushing the six-time major champion into a deciding set.

Iga Swiatek prevails in the third set

In the final set, Iga Swiatek tightened her game and cut down the errors that had cost her earlier. After making 12 unforced mistakes in the second, she limited that number to just seven in the decider.

She targeted Suzan Lamens’ serve, which proved vulnerable under pressure. Four of Lamens’ eight double faults came in the third set, and Swiatek capitalized by attacking second serves and converting both break chances. This gave her a commanding 4-1 lead.

Lamens did manage to get one break back, showing her fight until the end. But Swiatek held steady, responding with consistency and confidence to stay in front. The highlight came when Swiatek ripped a stunning backhand winner into the corner off a Lamens smash. Moments later, she sealed the match on her third match point with her seventh ace of the day.
