It was a heated clash between Ja Morant‘s Memphis Grizzlies and the Atlanta Hawks. After their two games in Europe, the Grizzlies returned to home court at the FedExForum and suffered a narrow 124-122 defeat to the Hawks on Wednesday night. It was Morant’s second game for the club since NBA Insider Shams Charania reported that the Grizzlies are open to hearing offers for their star player for the first time.
It has been a difficult campaign for the Grizzlies as the loss drops them to 11th place in the Western Conference standings and outside the play-in spots. The Hawks were in a similar position to the Grizzlies a couple of weeks ago, ended up trading away their star player Trae Young. The win propelled the Hawks to 21-25 as they currently sit at 10th in the Eastern Conference standings.
It has been a huge fall from grace for Ja Morant. Although, the two-time All-Star has reiterated that his desire is to stay with the club, it appears that the franchise have decided to move on from their superstar-caliber player. Since being drafted as the number two pick by the Grizzlies in the 2019 NBA draft, Morant was touted to be the face of the franchise.
Everything began well for both parties with Morant earning two All-Star nominations and winning the Most Improved Player award. However, injuries and his off-the-court problems began to take a toll on the player and the Grizzlies as well.
During Wednesday’s Grizzlies–Hawks game, Morant nearly sparked a confrontation with Mouhamed Gueye. In the second quarter, Morant drove to the rim and was tied up by Gueye. After pushing Gueye, the Hawks center grabbed his jersey, but fortunately, the incident didn’t escalate further.

The Grizzlies guard was later seen smiling. This is not the first time this season that Morant has been involved in a heated exchange. A couple of months ago, he was caught in a similar situation with Klay Thompson, despite not taking to court on that day.

With Morant making it public that he wants to continue to play for the Grizzlies, such acts will not go down well with the club’s front office. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the 26-year-old.
Ja Morant continues to be productive
It is Morant’s third game since the turn of the year. While the Grizzlies have gone 1-2 in those three games, Morant has posted some impressive numbers. He has recorded double-doubles in all three matches.

In 2026, the former Rookie of the Year is averaging 21 points, 3.3 rebounds and 12 assists in three appearances. He leads the league in assists per game so far this year. However, for the 2025-26 campaign, the guard is averaging 19.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 8.1 assists in 20 appearances.
Against the Hawks, Morant finished with 23 points on 7-of-15 shooting, 12 assists, two rebounds, one steal and three blocks in 29 minutes. Morant may not end the season with the Grizzlies, but his recent performances will definitely increase his value and generate some interest, which will find him more suitors as the trade deadline approaches.
