In the blimey sunlight, under the weight of pressure and watchful eyes, things can go wrong all of a sudden out of nowhere. It was a kerfuffle in the Kansas camp earlier this morning as the training camp intensity reached a boiling point today.

During their practice session, Kansas City Chiefs rookies Josh Simmons and Ashton Gillette had a heated interaction during drills. After absorbing an unprovoked punch from the offensive lineman, Gillotte didn’t hesitate. He quickly snatched off his opponent’s helmet and reignited the fight with forceful intensity that stopped practice cold.

Mark Poulouse, who caught the altercation video, noted that the head coach, Andy Reid, ran in quickly and intervened in the incident. Despite a few punches and shoves, there were no injuries or any wounds that needed intensive treatment. Although the fiery attitude points to buzzing energy in the camp, the rookies would have been read the riot act by the veteran coach.

The offensive lineman, Josh Simmons, is one of the most-watched rookies in the Kansas camp. Simmons is projected to take over the left end of the line after Joe Thuney vacated the spot post his move to the Chicago Bears in the offseason. The Chiefs drafted Simmons in the first round of the latest NFL Draft from the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Chiefs will press on with training camp as they prepare for their preseason opener on August 9th against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Chiefs camp have high expectations from Josh Simmons coming September

According to Jordan Schultz, the Kansas City Chiefs are impressed by the performance shown by the rookie Josh Simmons. Simmons, who had an unfortunate draft slide due to an injury, has shown visible signs of impressive talent in the training camp.

On Monday, coach Matt Nagy opened up on his insights about the rookie. Nagy showered heaps of praise on his abilities, stating that the brief displays of this athleticism during practice were enough to impress him. He also spoke on the mental capabilities of the rookie, especially his football IQ, work ethic, and how he’s processing coaching.

Simmons has been working with Andy Heck, the O-Line coach, even outside of the open practices where he runs down several drillls over and over again. Nagy said:

He’s so laser-focused and understanding from Coach Heck, on maybe there’s a mistake or a mental where his assignment-wise, he doesn’t go to the right spot. So we repeat it and go through it. He cannot have enough of those. Physically, he’s super talented… He’s a true pro right now, and this is just the beginning.

Coach Nagy also discussed the elements where he believed Simmons needed a bit more depth. He added that the player has to learn how to react quickly to protection calls and audibles at the line of scrimmage.

Earlier, former center Jason Kelce compared Josh Simmons to Trent Williams, a statement which was later revisited by the Chiefs’ DE George Karlaftis. Karlaftis, although impressed by his athleticism, mentioned giving time to see the lineman’s development:

Let’s see how he develops. I think he has all the tools, the intangibles, and the work ethic to be as great as he wants to be. Yeah, it’s all about putting in the work at the end of the day. So, I would agree with Jason’s comparison, for sure.

Josh’s development is important for the Chiefs’ offensive line, which got trounced by the Philadelphia Eagles in March. They will need him ready and safe coming September as they look forward to redemption.
