Mariah May defeated Toni Storm to become the new AEW Women’s World Champion. Storm dropped the title after 281 days, losing to her former friend in one of the most compelling storylines in AEW. The hard-hitting match featured many shocking moments, but the most surprising was when May acted on her heel instincts and slapped her mother.

The 26-year-old star slowly descended into madness when, during the match, she casually slapped her mother. It was truly a personal affair between the two women, as Toni Storm made her former friend—who had betrayed her—bleed with a Storm Zero onto the steel steps. However, Storm’s hesitation to hit Mariah May with the shoe allowed May to take advantage.

Unfortunately for the champion, that hesitation proved to be a turning point in the match. The Glamour ended the contest with two running knees and a Storm Zero of her own, preventing her mentor from achieving an almost year-long title reign. The 26-year-old wrestler turned on ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm right after winning the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament on the July 19th episode of Dynamite.

The brutal attack on the former AEW Women’s Champion established her as a proper heel in the rivalry. In many fans’ eyes, this was one of the best matches of the night, and they praised both wrestlers for excellently telling the story. Only time will tell how the Fighting Princess’s title reign will unfold.

One fan made it a racial issue, claiming it was typical of white mothers and that the situation would have been different in other scenarios. Furthermore, some fans said their mothers would have jumped the barricade and even entered the match themselves. Another fan simply couldn’t believe what had just transpired. Here are some of the top reactions from fans:

One user was shell-shocked and felt it was completely unnecessary to slap her mother, regardless of whether it was part of the storyline. Another fan agreed with this sentiment, stating that it was an attempt to get cheap heat from the fans. Some fans were okay with it, mentioning how Stephanie McMahon had also slapped her mother, Linda McMahon, back in the day.
