The hype was real after Stefon Diggs was traded to the Houston Texans during free agency last year. His wish of going to a serious Super Bowl contender came true after years of second and third-round exits in the playoffs. Diggs and C.J. Stroud were expected to do great things, but fate had other plans. The wide receiver’s debut season in Houston came to an end after he suffered a season-ending ACL tear. Little did Diggs and Texans fans realize that it would be the last time that the receiver would step onto the field for Houston.

Stefon Diggs has now committed to the New England Patriots. He joins a struggling franchise that is attempting to get its glory back after firing two head coaches over the last two years. While Diggs gets an opportunity to play for an energetic Head Coach in Mike Vrabel, it is fair to say that his dream of playing in a Super Bowl will not be coming to fruition anytime soon.

Diggs broke the bank with a three-year deal that can pay him up to $69 million, with $26 million of it guaranteed. The new deal pays the receiver handsomely, but another question has surfaced: Is he worth the money?

Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright thinks the Patriots wound up overpaying for Diggs. Speaking on his new deal on The Colin Cowherd podcast, Wright explained why he feels Diggs may not perform as well as he did after his return from the ACL injury.

One of the primary concerns that Wright has is that this is the first significant injury of Stefon Diggs’s career. New England essentially took a huge gamble by offering him big money.

Diggs last year was fine. He was not great. He was fine, and now, he is going to, at the start of next season, ten months, not even a full year removed from the first major injury of his career, it’s an ACL.

The analyst is now swayed by what he saw from Diggs last season. The receiver finished with 496 yards on 47 receptions and had 3 touchdowns.

Stefon Diggs stands to earn more than Davante Adams with his new contract

Here’s where things get interesting for Nick Wright. The Rams recently signed Davante Adams to a two-year deal worth $46 million, but the average annual value of the deal is $20 million. Stefon Diggs stands to earn up to $23 million per year. From Wright’s perspective, Adams is a better receiver, and his numbers speak for themselves.

If you would have asked me, ‘Diggs is gonna sign, what is his deal going to be?’ I would be like, I don’t know, man 10% less than Davante Adams deal. $26 million guaranteed is a s***load of money for Stefon Diggs who wears out his welcome and I don’t know if he is good for Drake Maye.

Nick Wright said

His skepticism is valid because an ACL injury is hard to recover from, and there is no guarantee that New England will get the best version of Diggs.

The Mike Vrabel-led Patriots are doing things differently, and the Head Coach is willing to take a gamble. Drake Maye showed promise last season, but he requires a reliable and experienced player at receiver. In the current market, there aren’t many of those. Davante Adams would have been a great option for New England to pursue, but the California-native chose to play for his hometown rather than bear the chilly winters in Boston.

Stefon Diggs’ decision to go with the Patriots was surprising because he has become increasingly frustrated with reaching the brink of a Super Bowl but falling short. If there is one thing that this free agency has proved, it is that for the right price, players can be convinced to consider joining any NFL team.
