In an electrifying opener at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes turned a near interception into a game-saving catch. With the game on the line in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Mahomes’s clutch play led the Chiefs to a 27-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.
The loss to the Chiefs in Week 1 is the Ravens’ second Week 1 loss in six years. The last time they lost the first game of the season was in 2021 when they ended up 4th in the AFC North and missed the playoffs. The Chiefs, on the other hand, return to winning ways in Week 1 after losing their first game in 2023 to New Orleans Saints.
The NFL season has been off to a rocking start. The pop singer Taylor Swift made a statement and Travis Kelce became an instant meme after his weird-looking haircut. Xavier Worthy proved himself with his first career TD, with Mahomes fetching the ball for him. There were also allegations of referees being partial to the Chiefs.
The incident took place with only a few minutes remaining in the last quarter of the game. Trenton Simpson, #23 for the Ravens, leapt in the air and hit Mahomes’ throw. The ball bounced in the air, leading Mahomes to out-jump both the defenders to make an impressive catch. NBC Analyst Cris Collinsworth was heavily impressed by the QB’s play.
First of all, this is a humongous play by Patrick Mahomes. He's gotta out-jump those two guys or it's going to get intercepted. He's got somebody on either side. He knew exactly what was going on. We saw Lamar Jackson in the championship game catch one of his own balls. That was huge.Cris Collinsworth noted on the replay of the catch

There are two reasons why the play saved the Chiefs. One, It prevented an interception. Considering, that Mahomes was immediately tackled and brought to the ground, it shaved off 30 seconds of the clock easily before Chiefs returned to punt. The electrifying game ultimately came to an end with Isaiah Likely’s toe being the game changer.
Patrick Mahomes made the second reception of his career
In addition to saving the game in the final moments, Patrick Mahomes also recorded a reception. Albeit the tricky plays from the Chiefs’ camp, it is surprising that it was Mahomes’ second in his career.
His first-ever reception came in a regular season game against the Denver Broncos. Mahomes caught another batted ball, deflected off a Broncos player for a 6-yard gain in the first quarter making the first reception of his career.
Lamar Jackson has famously caught his pass in the AFC Championship game of last year against the Chiefs. He, at the time, recorded the longest completion by a player to himself in NFL playoff history since at least 1950. The Chiefs will face yet another contender Cincinnati Bengals in the next week. Joe Burrow and the Bengals might try to do what Lamar Jackson was unable to do and stop the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.
