Cameron Norrie won his first match at the Moselle Open on Monday (November 4). He defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 60 minutes to register his first win on the ATP Tour after nearly four months.

The match, however, was not without controversy. Norrie’s pumped-up celebrations frustrated Carballes Baena, leading to an argument. During the customary handshake, the Spaniard complained that Norrie was shouting ‘Vamos’ while looking at his face.

The heated altercation continued even after the handshake. Norrie hit back and said, ‘It’s tennis man’ and a ‘couple of Vamos’ don’t harm anyone. In his defense, Norrie also said he played so badly that he needed to do something to pick himself up and so he shouted Vamos.

Fans on social media made fun of both Norrie and Carballes Baena. They think Carballes Baena was acting like a crybaby and also felt Norrie tried to get under the skin of World No. 56 by saying he played so badly.

Norrie also improved his head-to-head record over the 31-year-old to 2-1 as he denied the two-time title winner a chance to win his first trophy this season. Prior to the Moselle Open, Carballes Baena played at the Paris Masters, where he won both the qualifiers but was knocked out of the tournament after losing the Round of 64 match to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Cameron Norrie will face Grigor Dimitrov next

The match against Roberto Carballes Baena was Cameron Norrie‘s first win since his victory over Jozef Kovalik in the first round of the Swedish Open. The World No. 57 suffered a forearm injury and ended up skipping several tournaments, including the Olympics and the US Open. Before the tournament in Metz, Norrie lost in the qualifying round of the Paris Masters.

Norrie is scheduled to lock horns with Grigor Dimitrov in the third round. The Bulgarian, who is the third seed in the tournament, will kick-start his campaign in Metz against the Brit.

Norrie and Dimitrov have met each other three times on the ATP Tour. The 29-year-old leads the head-to-head record over Dimitrov 2-1 and last faced him in the 2022 Queen’s Club Championships

The five-time title winner has not yet won a tournament this season. Dimitrov, who has bagged nine career titles, has reached multiple finals this season but won the Brisbane International earlier this year with a straight-set victory over Holger Rune
