Game recognizes the game and it is true in Simone Biles and Iga Swiatek‘s case. The most decorated gymnast of all time, Biles, revealed that she is a big fan of the WTA World No. 1 when she came to watch the women’s quarterfinal match at the 2024 US Open.

When Jessica Pegula and Swiatek faced each other at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday (September 4) evening, Biles was in the stands to witness the action. The gymnastics icon who claimed three gold medals and a silver at the Paris Olympics, was seen sporting a light blue jacket, white crop top, and matching pants and sneakers with black shades.

Oh my god, so far it's been electric. It's a lot quieter than I anticipated, but it's a beautiful atmosphere. Me and my husband are such big fans of Iga so to come here and watch her work is just a blessing and an honor.

However, to Biles’ disappointment, Swiatek’s US Open campaign came to an end at the hands of Pegula, with the Pole losing in straight sets.

Iga Swiatek acknowledges issues with her serve after falling to Jessica Pegula in New York

Iga Swiatek will leave New York empty-handed once again as her woes on surfaces other than clay continue. The Polish won the US Open title in 2022 and has not reached the final since. In fact, this year was the first time besides her title run that she managed to get past the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.

Swiatek could not build on her quarterfinal qualification, losing to Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4. The Pole came into the match with the numbers in her favor. She led Pegula 6-3 in the head-to-head record and with a 6-0 record in Grand Slam quarterfinals.

However, Pegula stunned the World No. 1. Looking determined from the first shot, the 30-year-old pulled in front quickly, racing out to a 4-0 lead before the five-time major champion could make a mark on the scoreboard.

After the defeat, Swiatek admitted that she had issues with her serve and acknowledged that she was not at her best when playing from the baseline.

On the one hand, I was telling myself that I can still play well from the baseline. And I’ve had many tournaments where I didn’t serve well and I managed to win anyway. But I probably didn’t find the right solution because I couldn’t push with my serve. Also, I wasn’t that solid from the baseline to have a backup like that. You’re not going to win if you make so many mistakes, and I made those and it’s on me.

In the first set, Swiatek made 19 unforced errors, 16 of which came from the baseline, against just three winners. In the end, she finished with 41 unforced errors and just 12 winners. Pegula, on the other hand, will face last year’s semifinalist Karolina Muchova for a spot in her first Grand Slam final.
