Team USA women’s basketball team won their eighth consecutive gold medal at the Olympics, defeating France 67-66 in a thrilling game. The US team held a narrow lead with seconds left, but France’s Gabby Williams threw up a last-second shot that went in, although it was inside the 3-point line, securing the win for the Americans.

Williams led France in scoring with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and her 3-pointer with five seconds left made it a 65-64 game. However, Kahleah Copper’s clutch free throws gave the USA a 67-64 lead, and Williams’ final shot was not enough to overcome the deficit.

The US women’s basketball team has now won eight consecutive gold medals at the Olympics, dating back to the 1996 Atlanta Games. The team’s dominance was on display, despite a feisty French team playing in front of a home crowd.

The win was also a victory for Team USA as a whole, drawing them level with China at the top of the medal table for most golds. The US finished the Olympics with the most total medals of any nation. The win felt sweeter as the men’s team also overcame the French yesterday in what was a Steph “Chef” Curry masterclass.

Gabby Williams’ clutch shot at the end of the game was a heart-stopper, with the French player’s attempt at a game-tying three-pointer barely missing the mark. The shot was so close that it sent the crowd into a frenzy, with some fans initially thinking it was a three-pointer.

The US players, too, were left holding their breath as they waited for the officials to confirm that the shot was only a two-pointer, securing their 67-66 win. The tension was palpable as the players hugged each other in relief, knowing they had narrowly escaped defeat.

The US team’s performance was uncharacteristic, with 19 turnovers, missed shots, and mistakes that almost cost them the game. Two-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson was a standout player in the second half, but even though she made uncharacteristic mistakes and despite the struggles, the US team extended their win streak and secured another gold medal.
