In Short
  • Victor Wembanyama is a standout NBA player, known for his height, agility, and shot-blocking ability.
  • The San Antonio Spurs ended their 11-match winning streak with a loss to the New York Knicks, marking their lowest scoring game this season.
  • Wembanyama acknowledged his performance issues in the loss, citing hesitance and turnovers as factors affecting the team's game.

It is a no-brainer that Victor Wembanyama is an anomaly. The NBA world has never seen a player who is 7’4″, moves like a guard, and can shoot from range. He is a dominant shot-blocker as well and leads the NBA in blocked shots.

When the San Antonio Spurs drafted the French center as the number one pick in the 2023 NBA draft, they drafted a generational player they can build around for years to come. In just his third season in the league, Victor Wembanyama is already a top-10 contender for league MVP and is a heavy favorite for Defensive Player of the Year.

If there is anything that could prevent Wembanyama from greatness, it is his health. The Spurs star has dealt with a number of injuries in his short NBA career. He was dealt a huge blow last season, which could have derailed his NBA career. He was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder in February 2025, a blood clot in his shoulder that ruled him out for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

However, Wembanyama has bounced back strongly this season. He is currently averaging 23.7 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and a league-high 2.9 blocks per game in 46 appearances. With the 22-year-old, the Spurs have emerged as the biggest threat to the defending champions, Oklahoma City Thunder. The Spurs have dominated the Thunder and lead 3-1 in their head-to-head this season.

Before the Spurs took on the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, Wembanyama’s sheer arrival at the World’s Most Famous Arena drew some incredible reactions. He drew oohs and ahs as he walked into the arena. One woman exclaimed:

Oh my God! Boy, You is tall, sugar! Good Jesus! Bless you! Oh my goodness!

Wembanyama’s height has made several NBA players appear quite small when standing next to him. Hence, it could be mind-blowing for others to see him in person.

San Antonio Spurs 11-match winning streak comes to an end

Heading into their game at Madison Square Garden, the Spurs were on an 11-match winning streak. They were unbeaten throughout February. They have shown that their winning formula is more than just Wembanyama. However, their streak ended after the New York Knicks recorded a convincing 114-89 victory over the Spurs on Sunday night. It was their largest loss of the 2025-26 campaign.

The 89 points the Spurs scored are their lowest offensive output this season. Wembanyama recorded a double-double as he posted 25 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks, but did not have much support from his teammates. Meanwhile, the Knicks saw all their starters record double-digit points with Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson scoring 25 and 24 points, respectively.

The loss dropped the Spurs’ record to 43-17, leaving them second in the Western Conference standings, three games behind the Thunder. The win improves the Knicks’ record to 39-22, putting them in third place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Victor Wembanyama takes responsibility for their loss

While Wembanyama led the scorers and posted a double-double for his team, he did commit seven turnovers. The Knicks were able to crack the winning formula with their aggressive defensive coverage.

The French star recognized it and made it clear that the Knicks gameplan affected them in his post-match press conference.

I think they did put some physicality, but not even the most that we’ve seen… For some reason, we were somewhat hesitant. I was especially hesitant on three’s. I was holding the ball too much. We gave them life. We should have been better, especially in the first quarter. They’re a good basketball team, but they’re not, like, the nastiest team. They’re not an ugly team to watch, but they made our game ugly.

The Spurs end their five-game road trip on March 3 against the Philadelphia 76ers. With Joel Embiid and Paul George ruled out, Wembanyama and the Spurs will fancy their chances.
