Despite all his flaws, there is no denying that Vince McMahon is responsible for turning professional wrestling into a global phenomenon. Wrestling was highly fragmented before the 80s, with its presence only in parts of North America and Japan. However, the Genetic Jackhammer turned wrestling into a wide-scale product by bringing it all under the WWF banner and broadcasting television shows. This all began when he took over the company from his father, Vincent Jess McMahon.

In the recent Mr. McMahon documentary by Netflix, the 79-year-old revealed a wholesome moment that he shared with his father. This was the only moment when his father told him he loved and was proud of him. However, this moment came only after he had become a huge success.

The former WWE Chairman bought the company from his own father in 1982 with the goal of making it a global success. Prior to this time, all wrestling companies existed within their own territories. All wrestling promoters had an unwritten agreement that they would never encroach on each other’s territories. McMahon became the first to break this agreement.

“There was a point when my dad told me that he was proud of me. He said, ‘You know Vinne, all these friends of mind aren’t really friends. All these promoters I have worked with, all these years in their territories, you know what? F*k them. You’re beating all of them. I am proud of you for what you’ve done. Fck them all.’ Of course he waited until I was a success. Maybe he felt that all along but he never told me. That was one of the biggest moments of my life.
Until..The day before he died was the only time that he told me that he loved me. But, wow! He told me. Before he died. God, it felt so good.

In a manner that many still consider unethical, McMahon started expanding WWF’s footprint across the North American territories. He started broadcasting his shows on television and eventually ended up as the only major player in North America. This was the beginning of the empire that WWE would end up becoming.

It is worth noting that McMahon’s methods also went against the wishes of his father. Vincent Jess McMahon wanted the promotion to prominently feature home-grown superstars rather than those from other promotions. The 79-year-old promised to follow these orders while buying the company. However, he bought superstars such as Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper soon after his father passed away.

Vince McMahon reveals his father almost sold WWE to Hall of Famer Gorilla Monsoon

In the recently released Mr. McMahon documentary, Vince McMahon revealed that when his father wanted to sell the company, he never considered his own son as a prospect. In fact, Gorilla Monsoon was always considered a natural heir to the company and everyone thought that the company would be sold to him.

When Vince McMahon started working in WWF, there was tension between him and the Hall of Famer right away. Gorilla Monsoon looked at Vinnie Mac as competition, and the 1999 Royal Rumble Winner said that he was indeed correct.

After buying WWF from his father, Vince McMahon shocked everyone by taking the company to unbelievable heights. His vision was to make WWF grow much bigger than just a regional promotion and he left no stone unturned in his quest. Even though many would claim his methods to be controversial, Vince McMahon was successful in making WWE a multi-dollar global phenomenon.
