As surprising as it many sound, Vincent Kompany is the new manager for FC Bayern Munich. The former Burnley boss was appointed by Bayern a few days ago after failing to find another replacement following Thomas Tuchel‘s departure. As many still found it difficult to make sense of the appointment, Pep Guardiola‘s involvement in the same has given some much needed clarity.

Kompany’s appointment came as a surprise for many, given the fact that the former Manchester City defender finished 19th with Burnley in the Premier League. The fact that a club like Bayern Munich would appoint a manager who just got relegated was shocking to many. However, former Bayern boss and current Man City manager Guardiola had a significant role to play in the decision.

Prior to Kompany’s appointment, it has been revealed that the club asked Guardiola for his opinion on the manager. It is understood that Guardiola spoke highly of his former player, citing that he was an ideal man for the job.

Guardiola’s relationship with Bayern management remains excellent and with three Bundesliga titles and many other domestic accolades, it isn’t surprising either.

As if appointing Vincent Kompany wasn’t that big of a surprise for fans, the club’s upcoming transfer target will surely do the job. Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has had a season to remember under Erik ten Hag this year. The centre-back largely improved upon his form after initially missing out on the starting line-up for several months.

Despite missing out on the FA Cup final due to injury, Maguire’s improved form this season has turned a lot of heads across Europe. For starters, even Thomas Tuchel had a keen interest in the 31-year-old. Newly appointed Kompany is an admirer of the Englishman as well. His international teammate and captain Harry Kane also plays for the German giants.

Despite being linked to West Ham United in the previous transfer window, the move broke down due to disagreements in wage. Bayern have already signed English defender Eric Dier but may still be on the lookout for a creative, ball-playing defender. After going a season trophyless for the first time since 2012, it will be interesting to see what changes Kompany will bring at the club.
