Brazil suffered one of the most embarrassing defeats in recent times after succumbing 1-0 to Paraguay. The Selecao hadn’t lost against them since 2008, with the result coming 24 hours after head coach Dorival Junior stated that his men will be in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following the game, star man Vinicius Jr. has apologised to the fans for the embarrassing result.
Brazil have only managed to win two games since the start of the Copa America in July. The men in yellow struggled to produce results in the tournament in the USA, with their slump in form continuing into the International break.
Brazil only managed to get three shots on target, with double the number failing to hit the mark. Despite fielding a Real Madrid front three of Endrick, Rodrygo, and Vinicius Jr., the Selecao have struggled to score goals.
Games in Europe are faster than here. I want to ask the fans for forgiveness. I know we're in a complicated moment, but we'll be back.Vinicius Jr. told the press after the defeat vs. Paraguay
Fans laughed at how the front three in Europe fail to perform on the International stage while also targeting Ballon d’Or favorite Vinicius for his lack of goals for the National team.
Dorival Junior takes the blame for Brazil’s sluggish performances
Brazil head coach Dorival Junior did not want to point fingers at any player following the defeat to Paraguay. In a post-match press conference, the 62-year-old admitted that he was directly responsible for the poor results and that his side lacked ‘many things’ against La Albirroja. He was also criticized for Brazil’s exit in the quarterfinal of the Copa America.
We lacked a lot of things. I'm responsible for that and don't want to single out any player. We need much more to be able to reach the superlative level. It's not easy, but we'll have to intensify our work.Dorival Junior told the press via BeSoccer
Brazil are currently fifth in World Cup qualification standings, and have ten points from a possible 24.
Several fans have mocked the manager for trying to emulate Jurgen Klopp and stating that they’ll reach the final, only to lose the next game. A few have called for the boss to be sacked, while others argue that the players have to do more on the pitch. Meanwhile, others find it surprising that the best players for Real Madrid ‘go missing’ for Brazil during International games.
