Brazil were held to a frustrating draw against Colombia who have been impressive in the group stages of the Copa America. Despite the result, Brazil booked their spot in the quarterfinals after qualifying in second place with five points. Colombia on the other hand, grabbed top spot in Group D with 7. Brazil however, will be without star man Vinicius Jr. in the quarterfinal.
The Brazilian winger picked up his second yellow card of the group stages, thereby incurring suspension for the next game. Supporters were not happy to learn that the man leading their attack will not be available to face difficult opponents Uruguay on the 6th of July. That being said, the player did not live up to his expectations against Colombia.
Despite a wonderful brace against Paraguay in his previous outing, Vinicius made zero key passes in 90 minutes while also failing to hit the target throughout the game. The Champions League winner and Ballon d’Or frontrunner made just 28 touches throughout the game while also having zero successful dribbles against his opponent.
Brazil’s underwhelming display was summed up by a post made by Neymar Jr. on social media. The player posted a picture of himself and his children sleeping in front of the television during the second half of the game.
Brazil finish second in Group D as Colombia grab top spot
Brazil took on Colombia with the hope that a win on Tuesday would take them to the summit in Group D. The Selecao began the match strongly, taking the early lead through a sublime free-kick, courtesy of FC Barcelona winger Raphinha. Colombia responded instantly, as Davinson Sanchez headed the ball in from a James Rodriguez free kick.
The goal was eventually ruled out for offside while Alisson Becker was kept busy as Rodriguez made several attempts to find the net from free kicks. Colombia eventually struck back through Daniel Munoz, who beat Becker from close range after being put through on goal by Jhon Cordoba.
In the second half, Colombia managed to take the upper hand. With Brazil struggling to create chances, Rodriguez and co. shifted their focus to snatching all three points from Brazil. Several Brazil fans demanded a penalty for a ‘foul’ committed on Vinicius Jr. in the second half. In the end, Becker’s valiant display in between the sticks coupled with a splash of good luck helped Brazil to claim a point against the Colombians.
