Vinicius Jr. and his Real Madrid teammates made no effort whatsoever to conceal their anger and frustration at the Brazilian’s Ballon d’Or snub on Monday night. France Football and UEFA announced Manchester City star Rodri as the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, much to the disappointment and frustration of Vinicius and his teammates.

To begin with, the Real Madrid entourage boycotted the ceremony as they remained absent at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. Following the ceremony, Vinicius took to social media as he posted a stern message seemingly aimed at France Football and UEFA. Rodri became the first defensive midfielder in decades to win the prestigious accolade.

As soon as Rodri was crowned as the ‘best player in the world’, several Real Madrid stars expressed their dissent. French International Eduardo Camavinga called the award ‘Football Politics’ and confidently called Vinicius the best in the world, saying that no award could say otherwise. Several fans were angered by his comments as they criticized the club’s sense of entitlement.

Aurelien Tchouameni also spoke along similar lines as he warned the rest of Europe about what’s to come. Vinicius’ Brazil teammate Eder Militao named him the ‘best’ on a night where 100 journalists cast their votes to determine the same. Wolves footballer Mario Lemina bizarrely posted a ‘bye football‘ story on Instagram, where he named Vinicius the best in the world.

Despite the negative reaction from Real Madrid stars, there were many on social media who took immense joy in Rodri’s triumph. From winning the award playing in a position that is often ‘neglected’ to claiming the award for the first time in decades, Rodri’s win symbolizes a victory that goes beyond himself. It is a message and a gesture to all the greats who’ve played in the same role but haven’t won the award.
