Real Madrid picked up their fourth win of the season as Vinicius Jr. stunned the Santiago Bernabeu after coming on in the second half. The Brazilian put on a show for the home fans as Los Blancos came from behind to claim all three points on the night. Espanyol were on the receiving end of things as Dani Carvajal, Vinicius, Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo got on the scoresheet.
Things weren’t looking good for the hosts as the visitors took the lead in the early minutes of the second half. Even though Jofre Carreras put in all the effort that led to the goal, it went down as an own goal by Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian became the first Real Madrid keeper to score an own goal in the 21st century. However, the tide turned when Carlo Ancelotti subbed on Vinicius as soon as they went 1-0 down.
3 minutes later, Jude Bellingham set up Carvajal for the equalizer before Vinicius Jr. combined with Rodrygo for a sublime finish. After taking the lead, there was no looking back for the hosts.
The No.7 scored the third goal of the night for Real as he beat Joan Garcia with a left-footed finish. The fourth and final goal of the game came from the penalty spot, even though the controversial penalty call wreaked havoc on social media.
Carlo Ancelotti ‘happy’ with Real Madrid’s performance after closing down gap with Barcelona
Carlo Ancelotti compared his side’s showing to that of ‘rock and roll’ after Real Madrid closed down the gap between Barcelona and them to a single point. After going 38 La Liga games unbeaten, Ancelotti stated that he was impressed by the combination and chemistry among his players on the pitch. He also lauded how his side reacted to going down a goal in the 54th minute.
We played better than in other matches. We had rhythm and generated more chances. We pressed well and recovered defensively in time. Bit by bit, we are getting back to our best. I'm happy with the dynamic we showed today.Carlo Ancelotti told the press
Despite injuries to several players in the starting line-up and the squad still getting back to full strength, Madrid have managed to produce results. Mbappe scored his fourth goal in La Liga from the penalty spot and put an end to criticism aimed at him for failing to find the net in his first few games.
The Los Blancos play their next game against Deportivo Alaves on Tuesday night before a difficult trip to Civitas Metropolitano to face local rivals Atletico Madrid. As things stand, rivals Barcelona have a game in hand and still remain in top position in the League.
