Vinnie Pasquantino etched his name in World Baseball Classic (WBC) history with an iconic 3-home run game for Italy against Mexico. After his team’s win, he shared a message for Team USA.

The clash between Italy and Mexico became a massive one after the USA’s huge defeat on Tuesday. The Americans, who were 3-0 after 3 games, suffered an 8-6 defeat against Italy.

Before that matchup, USA manager Mark DeRosa found his name trending for the wrong reasons. In an interview at MLB Network, where he works as an analyst, he expressed that his team had already booked their place in the quarterfinals.

That was not the case, however. Despite a perfect record till the game against Italy, the USA were not officially qualified for the knockout stage. After their loss against the European team, DeRosa admitted his mistake and claimed that he had misread the calculations.

The loss of the U.S. meant the door was open for Mexico to qualify for the next round. Having lost 5-3 against their fierce rivals, a win on Wednesday night would have seen them go through. Their margin of victory could have also decided the fate of American team.

Mexico, though, ended up losing. Vinnie Pasquantino, the Kansas City Royals star, opened the scoring for Italy with a solo home run in the 2nd inning. Jon Berti would then hit a solo shot of his own in the 4th inning and gave Italy a 2-0 lead.

After scoring from a sac bunt from Dante Mori in the 5th inning, Team Italy added two more runs in this inning through a bases-loaded single from Jakob Marsee.

The star of the show, however, was Pasquantino. Following his second home run of the game in the 6th inning, he scripted history in the 8th inning.

His 3rd home run of the game, another solo shot, would make it an 8-1 game. He would become the first player to have a 3-home run game in WBC history.

With the win, Italy finished as group winners with a 4-0 record. The U.S. had to settle for a second place finish in Pool B with a 3-1 record.

During the interview with Jon Morosi on FS1, the Royals star would send a message to the USA and joke that they were on their minds during this game.

Pasquantino, who is the captain of Italy, was hitless in the tournament before this game. He was 0-for-12 and was struggling to make an impact with the bat. This was the first time in his career that he had ever hit 3 home runs in one game.

Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs star, is a huge fan of baseball. He grew up playing both baseball and football and has a good relationship with the Royals.

Following Pasquantino’s 3rd home run of the game, the Chiefs quarterback would send a message to him on X while tagging him in a repost.

Pasquantino and Italy’s attention now turns towards Puerto Rico on Saturday. This quarterfinal matchup will take place at Daikin Park in Houston. The winners of this game will take on the winners of the Venezuela-Japan game in the semi final.

Speaking of the United States, they will face their North American neighbors Canada. The other quarterfinal will see South Korea take on the Dominican Republic. The semifinals will take place on March 15 and 16 on Miami with the final on March 17.
