KKR vs RCB

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) once again faced humiliation at the hands of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) when the arch-rivals locked horns on Thursday (April 6) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Chasing a massive 205, RCB faltered, terribly. Not a single world-class batter had any answer in front of KKR’s hungry bowlers who did not miss the chance to win the match by a great margin.

Chasing the mammoth target, openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis walked in and started well. They got RCB off the flier, stitching 44 runs before Sunil Narine’s dismissal of Kohli triggered the collapse.

In the next over, Varun Chakravarthy got rid of the captain. Du Plessis had scored 23 runs from 12 balls with two fours and two sixes (he was also the high-scorer for the RCB). And another over later, the dangerous Glenn Maxwell also had a short stay at the crease, scoring five runs from seven balls. In that same over, Chakravarthy sent Harshal Patel into packing as well.

When Sunil Narine got his second wicket by getting rid of Shahbaz Ahmed, fans started anticipating what they usually do when RCB come to play at Eden Gardens- a proper batting collapse. The reason is RCB’s scoring the lowest innings total (49) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history, back in 2017, against KKR at the same venue.

Later, debutant Suyash Sharma dismissed the likes of Anuj Rawat, Dinesh Karthik, and Karn Sharma for single-digit scores. However. David Wiley and Akash Deep stayed glued to the crease in the death overs and tried to deny a defeat by a huge margin. But this didn’t happen and RCB eventually lost the match by a huge 81-run margin.

Amongst the bowlers, Chakravarthy scalped four wickets for 15 runs, Sunil Sharma grabbed three, Sunil Narine got two, and Shardul Thakur picked up one wicket. Thakur was the star of the match, not with the ball though.

Earlier in the match, when KKR were in a spot of bother with 89/5 in the 12th over, Thakur’s scintillating knock snatched RCB’s hope of restricting the home team to a mere total. He slammed 68 runs from 29 balls with nine fours and three maximums at a strike rate of over 230.

Apart from him, Rinku Singh also played a clutch knock, scoring 46 runs from 33 balls. Afghanistan batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz became the first player from the country to score a half-century in IPL (57 off 44 balls).
