Lakers head coach, JJ Redick showcases his frustration after D'Angelo Russell's poor showing against the Memphis Grizzlies.
D'Angelo Russell and JJ Redick
The Los Angeles Lakers’ 2024–25 NBA season got off to a strong start. However, their level of intensity has decreased in their most recent games. Due to several players’ lack of effort, the Lakers lost their game on Wednesday night against the Memphis Grizzlies. Lakers star D’Angelo Russell and coach JJ Redick went viral during the game.
Russell had a subpar performance after playing for 22 minutes, finishing with 12 points, three assists, and one rebound. Russell only played six minutes in the third quarter and was benched for the rest of the game. Not only that, his head coach, JJ Redick, was visibly frustrated with his performance against the Grizzlies during the Lakers’ poor loss.
The frustrated Redick benched Russell after he made an error during the Lakers attack. In a viral video making rounds on the internet, the coach showcased his anger on the bench after Russell’s missed shot. This led to the Grizzlies scoring in the next play during their possession. Russell has been living on thin ice for the Lakers as he plays in the last year of his contract.

He has also been mentioned in trade speculations, and the Lakers may use him as a trading chip. Aside from this, the Lakers were without key players like Rui Hachimura and Anthony Davis due to injuries. Davis appeared to hurt his ankle during the team’s game against the Detroit Pistons. AD seems to have a condition he’s dealt with since the summer.
Former Lakers star urges his side to part ways with D’Angelo Russell
D’Angelo Russell has found himself in hot waters after his poor performance against the Memphis Grizzlies. One of the main reasons Russell has been publicly criticized by Redick was his inability to cope with the game. He has remained inconsistent for the franchise over the last few years. This has also garnered reactions from ex-players like Jeff Teague.
Former NBA player Jeff Teague believes Russell simply “does not fit” with the Purple and Gold because of his recent showings. The former Pacers guard believes Redick needs a defensively strong backcourt player.
However, the absence of a steady second unit is the main cause of the Lakers’ mixed outcomes. Russell and the other starters will occasionally perform poorly. The Purple and Gold still lack a small bench player who can cover those gaps in their absence. Popular for his defense, Gabe Vincent hasn’t done the same for the Lakers yet. Only time will tell if the Lakers can turn it around.
