India celebrate a wicket during the fifth T20I
Virat Kohli and the entire Indian team were fined 40 percentage of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate in the fifth T20I against England in Ahmedabad. The match which turned out to be the deciding match in the series was won by India following an excellent batting performance led by openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as well as supporting acts from Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya.
In the bowling department, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shardul Thakur were the heroes as they came up with crucial breakthroughs just as the English batsmen looked well set to chase down the mammoth target of 225. The former was adjudged the Man of the Match for his match-changing spell while Virat Kohli was adjudged the Man of the Series for his batting displays throughout the series.
India found to be two overs short of the stipulated time
India were imposed the match fixing sanctions by the match referee Javagal Srinath who found that India were two overs short of the stipulated target that is allowed after other factors are taken into consideration such as umpiring delays and unforeseen circumstances. According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players must be fined 20% of the match fees for an over’s delay. Since there were two overs here, the fine is 40%.
Virat Kohli and India pleaded guilty to the sanction and accepted the fine leading to no necessity for a hearing. The charges were initially leveled by the on-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and Nitin Menon as well as third umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan before Srinath imposed the sanctions.
