Indian cricketing maestro Virat Kohli took a sharp dig at television broadcasters for highlighting the details of his personal life, over his playing abilities. The 36-year-old veteran Indian batter expressed frustration, after several cricket shows discussed his eating habits, in recent days.

Virat Kohli remains one of India’s most influential personalities, and draws massive fanfare across all ages in the country. He most recently, helped the Indian national team lift its third Champions Trophy title. It added another major win to his impressive collection of accolades with the team. India beat New Zealand in the final of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, at the Dubai International Stadium.

Kohli ended the Champions Trophy campaign as India’s second-highest run-getter, with 218 runs in five innings at an average of 54.50. He also shattered multiple records, becoming the fastest player to breach the 14,000 ODI runs mark. However, prior to the tournament, Kohli endured a rough patch. His poor form in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and in India’s 3-0 Test Series defeat to New Zealand, drew criticism.

Cricket broadcasters discussed the batter’s form, with some even urging him to consider retirement. However, there has been a lot of chatter surrounding Kohli’s personal life. Even in cricketing shows, his eating habits have been intense talking-point. Some broadcasters talked about the player’s love for ‘Chole Bhature’. On his return to the Delhi Ranji side earlier this year, his lunch order became a news headline.

Virat Kohli, in an interview at RCB Innovation Lab’s Indian Sports Summit, expressed his displeasure with the cricket broadcasters frequently discussing his food habits and favorite food spots. He noted that a broadcaster’s role should be limited to analyzing cricket. He urged them not to highlight the details of his personal life. Moreover, Kohli suggested broadcasters to rather focus on helping India become a sports-forward nation. He added that it remains a collective responsibility.

A broadcast show needs to talk about the game and not what I ate yesterday for lunch or my favorite chole-bhature place in Delhi… Rather, you could talk about what an athlete is going through.
