This week marks the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to India’s domestic 50-over competition, the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The two players are expected to earn significantly from the tournament, with Kohli to represent Delhi and Sharma to play for Mumbai.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s decision to return to represent their domestic teams in the Vijay Hazare Trophy comes due to the BCCI’s mandatory directive, requiring all centrally contracted players to feature in at least two rounds of List A or First-Class matches, when not on international duty. This new policy has turned the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy into a star-studded affair, including the two ex-India captains.
It is also a bid for Kohli and Sharma to remain in contention for the 2027 World Cup, amid uncertainty over their future. They have already retired from two out of the three formats of international cricket, making their participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy all the more important to remain fit and in form. Kohli is set to represent Delhi, making a historic comeback to the competition after a long hiatus of 15 years. He has been named in the 19-member squad, led by Rishabh Pant.
Kohli last played for Delhi in the 2010 Vijay Hazare Trophy, and boasts a remarkable tally of 910 runs in 16 innings at an average of 60.66. Sharma, on the other hand, last played in the domestic 50-over competition in 2018 and has also scored over 800 runs. The two players will also command a massive salary, in line with the BCCI’s policy of following a standardized pay structure based on experience.
As seasoned campaigners with over 300 List A appearances, Sharma and Kohli belong to the elite pay category for domestic duties. These two veterans will receive a daily match fee of INR 60,000, which is designated for senior players with more than 41 List A games under their belt. Although they are only scheduled to feature in the first two matches of the competition, the pair will take home a whopping INR 1,20,000.
In addition to the premier pay tier, the Vijay Hazare Trophy features two additional salary brackets for players. Those with 21 to 40 List A appearances will earn a match fee of INR 50,000, whereas cricketers who have played fewer than 20 games will receive INR 40,000 per match.
