India vs England 2021: Virat Kohli could equal Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting’s records with a century in the first ODI
Virat Kohli
Indian skipper Virat Kohli is on the verge of equaling cricketing icons Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting‘s records. The same would take place if the No. 1 ranked batsman in the world gets his long-awaited 71st international century tomorrow in the first ODI of the three-match series against England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

The three ODIs will be played in the same venue on the 23rd, 26th and 28th of March behind closed doors. Having won the test series 3-1 and the T20I series 3-2, India would want to keep up their form and blank the Englishmen in the tour before each player disperses to his own Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise for the tournament that begins on the 9th of April in Chennai.
Virat Kohli needs a century to break the records
It has been quite a long time since Virat Kohli scored a century in international cricket. His last one came in the Day/Night test against Bangladesh in November, 2019. Further, his previous century in ODIs came in March of 2019 against Australia. Given Kohli’s high standards, these stats are bound to be a disappointment despite the fact that he has still been very consistent and has ensured his average is perpetually high.
If Kohli manages to get a century tomorrow or in the series, he will equal Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most centuries by an Indian at home which stands at 20. Further, a century would see Kohli equal Ricky Ponting in the list of most number of centuries as captain across all formats. Ponting is currently on top with 22 while Kohli has 21. Thus, a century would lead to the Indian skipper breaking two incredible records.
The first ODI begins tomorrow at 1:30 PM IST.
