Liverpool Football Club came under significant criticism for taking too long to make their first signing ahead of the 2024/25 season. Despite new manager Arne Slot taking charge of the club, things have been ‘slow’ in the transfer department. While the club have let go of several players in the past few months, arrivals haven’t been at par as of late.
Liverpool drew 0-0 against Spanish side Las Palmas in their last pre-season friendly ahead of the Premier League season. In a recent interaction with the press, club captain Virgil van Dijk opened about his concerns about the lack of signings the club have made.
I think that we (Liverpool) should make some signings based on how long the season will go
Virgil van Dijk told the press
That being said, the center-back acknowledged how hard the management are working behind the scenes to bring in new players. The club have already brought in Fabio Carvalho and are working to bring in Euro Cup hero Martin Zubimendi to the club.
Virgil van Dijk hints at ‘final’ season with the Reds
Virgil van Dijk joined Liverpool back in 2018 for a whopping £75 million. Despite breaking the then record for a defender, it is safe to say that the Dutchman has lived up to every bit of his price tag. The center-back has been a crucial element of Jurgen Klopp‘s squad, and will certainly be important under Arne Slot as well. However, recent comments made by the 33-year-old has raised eyebrows among fans on social media.
There are no changes (toward a new deal) at the moment. I trust the club and we will see what happens.Virgil van Dijk told the press
Even though his tone did not raise concern, fans are worried that the player has entered the final 12 months of his contract.
Van Dijk currently earns around £250,000 per week, and is the second highest paid player after Mohamed Salah. The Dutchman has made 197 appearances for the Reds and has won eight collective trophies during his time at Anfield. Alongside Virgil van Dijk, Salah is also rumored with a move away from the club.
