FC Barcelona signing Vitor Roque last season was one of the most exciting moments for both club and player. However, the move did not go to plan, as then Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez completely excluded the Brazilian from his plans. After new boss Hansi Flick took charge of the team, Barca management made the difficult decision of sending him away on loan to Real Betis.
Roque recently featured for Brazil in an U20 game against Mexico. His post-match comments claimed that he hadn’t smiled in a long time and that it felt good to do so. Roque found the net for Betis in a 2-0 win over Leganes in La Liga, as the forward celebrated emphatically in front of the home fans. He then proceeded to kiss the badge, much to the surprise of many on social media.
Roque was perfectly positioned to guide the ball into the net as another former Barca man, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, saw his shot punched away by the keeper. Abde was also responsible for Betis’ opener in the 74th minute.
Barcelona has loaned out Vitor Roque to Betis until June 2025, with the option of extending his stay for another year. The club also has the right to make the deal permanent if they find him worthy of a spot in the squad.
Fans react to Vitor Roque kissing the Real Betis badge
Rival fans couldn’t hold back their laughter as Vitor Roque kissed Real Betis’ badge after scoring his first goal for the club. A fan pointed out that he hadn’t kissed Barca’s badge despite being there for a year. Another added that fans should be genuinely happy that a player of his talent is getting regular playing time after being freed from the shackles of Barcelona.
Another warned every other Brazilian player not to sign for Barcelona after the way Roque was treated by their management. Some even recalled how Barcelona had always been the 19-year-old’s dream club and how he was reduced to tears after scoring his first goal for them months ago.
FC Barcelona brought in the youngster from Brazilian club Athletico Paranaense for a total fee of €61 million back in December 2023. During his stay at Barca, he only managed to score twice in 14 odd appearances under Xavi Hernandez. If anything, Roque deserves playing time and an opportunity to prove to the rest of the world that he is worth the hype.
