Viviane Araujo, Alexa Grasso, flyweight fight halted as Araujo pulls out of UFC 270
Viviane Araujo
Seems like UFC 270 has taken a little setback just a fortnight before it’s happening, as the flyweight bout between Viviane Araujo and Alexa Grasso has been cancelled, as Araujao pulls out of the fight leaving Grasso left without an opponent as of now. This was supposed to be one of the women’s three flyweight bouts on the card for the event that is taking place on January 23, 2022, in Honda Center, Anaheim, USA.
The main event is headlined with a heavyweight title clash between the undisputed champion Francis Ngannou looking forward to making his first successful title defence against the interim-heavyweight champion Cyril Gane. The fight is between former teammates with Ngannou being formerly associated with Gane’s current gym of MMA Factory in France. The co-main involves a trilogy settlement between UFC Flyweight Champion Brandon Moreno and former champion Deveison Figueiredo.
More on cancellation of Viviane Araujo vs Alexa Grasso flyweight clash
According to ESPN Deportes, the reason for the pullout is an undisclosed injury, but it’s yet to be confirmed who will replace her to fight Grasso. Araujo was coming off a loss from Katlyn Chookigian snapping her previously 2-fight winning streak. Arajauo is currently 10-3 in her overall MMA career and this was her first fight after May 2021.
Grasso on the other hand has an overall record of 13 wins and 3 losses. Having last fought almost a year ago in February 2021, Grasso was coming off a 2-fight winning streak over Ji Yeon Kim and Maycee Barber. Looking at the rankings, it seems like Barber should try avenging the loss back from Grasso and hence, should replace Araujo to fight the latter. Barber otherwise has no upcoming competition and last fought in July 2021.
