Philadelphia 76ers led by Tyrese Maxey have lost three of their last four games after an impressive run of results. The 76ers suffered a narrow 117-115 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Xfinity Mobile Arena on Friday night. Joel Embiid led the scorers for the 76ers with 33 points while Maxey recorded 22 points, five rebounds and nine assists.

With all the stars on the court, it was Jaylon Tyson for the Cavs who scored a game-high 39 points. It was also a a career-high in points for the 23-year-old. His performance on Friday helped the Cavs climb into the top-six ahead of the 76ers, and improve their record to 24-19. Consecutive losses to the Cavs saw the 76ers drop into the play-in spots with a 22-18 record.

2024 Most Improved Player in the NBA, Tyrese Maxey, has shown no signs of slowing down this season. He is currently third in the scoring charts averaging 30.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists. With Embiid and Paul George missing a number of games this season, Maxey helped keep the 76ers afloat in the Eastern Conference standings.

76ers fans are well known for being a tough crowd and were caught booing their own players several times. The franchise have won three NBA championships in their history, but have not lifted the trophy in 42 years with their last one being in 1983. Their last NBA Finals appearance was in 2001 and their recent results have not been promising. Hence, the fans have been deprived of any success for a while now.

This season, the 76ers have seen another start in the making, VJ Edgecombe, who was drafted as the number three pick. Alongside Maxey, the duo are one of the strongest backcourt duos in the Eastern Conference this season.

During the 76ers vs. Cavaliers game, Maxey and Edgecombe were seen having a heated altercation on the bench after a defensive misunderstanding between the two guards.

Some may read too much into it and assume there is a rift between the players in the locker room. Such heated exchanges between teammates are common in the heat of the moment.

The tension between players may have escalated following a defensive miscue but the fans were quick to express their opinions across social media after the altercation went viral.

The internet were quick to blame Maxey despite being the senior player for the defensive lapse. However, it is still good to see that the players care for every possession and are always looking to improve.

Tyrese Maxey speaks about VJ Edgecombe

Through the first three games of the season, the 76ers were undefeated. During that period, Maxey and Edgecombe combined for a total of 186 points, which was the highest total by a backcourt duo in as many games since 1970. The two young guards have shown that the franchise have a promising backcourt for years to come.

During his interview with Austin Rivers, Maxey spoke about how Edgecombe left a strong impression on him and his teammates.

He’s cold. I don’t want to say cocky, but it’s a good cocky. He was trying to test me. We had a offseason workout, and I said I’ll be there at 6 AM for whoever wanna get busted. He didn’t say nothing, Trendon Watford was there. I’m on the court stretching, and at 5:58, I just see VJ Edgecombe walking onto the court.

Tyrese Maxey told Austin Rivers

The 76ers were blessed with the number three pick after a horrible 2024-25 campaign. Edgecombe may not win the Rookie of the Year award, but he is currently averaging 15.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists and has shown that he has a promising future ahead.
