On Sunday, the Toronto Blue Jays made a massive move. According to reports, the Canadian outfit locked down one of their top stars, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on a massive 14-year $500 million deal. This deal will be officially announced after a pending physical.
Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays were working on an extension deal in the offseason. He was in the final year of his contract and would have become a free agent in the upcoming offseason. The Dominican-Canadian international had previously expressed that he wanted to stay with the team.
However, just like Juan Soto, he was also open to all 30 teams including the New York Yankees, a team with whom he has had some grudge in the past. He even claimed that his number to the Blue Jays was way lower than what Soto got.
Now there will not be any rumors and speculations regarding him after the 2025 season as he penned down a huge deal. The 4-time MLB All-Star agreed on a 14-year $500 million deal. There are no-deferrals in this.

This is now the third largest contract to be offered to a player in the MLB. The two biggest deals belong to Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani.
While the Japanese international became the first player to land a deal worth more than $500 million ($700 million), Soto shattered several records with his deal with the New York Mets in December 2024. The former San Diego Padres star signed a 15-year $765 million deal, which turned out to be biggest contract in professional sports.
Social media reacts towards reports of Vladimir Guerrero Jr’s $500 million contract extension
After Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays failed to reach a contract extension agreement before, many thought that he would become a free agent. Thus, reports of him signing a massive 14-year deal has left the fans on social media shocked.

The fans were left in split. While some applauded his loyalty for the team, some labeled this deal was “overpay“. One user wrote, “complete panic move” while reacting to this.

Going to be a horrendous contract in a couple years

This will also be the biggest deal the Toronto Blue Jays have ever offered to a player. Their previous highest was the 6-year $150 million deal from which they landed free agent George Springer in 2021. This deal of Guerrero Jr. is more than triple the amount they gave to Springer back then.
MLB insider labels Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s contract extension as ‘seismic’ moment for Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays locking down Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to big deal has send shockwaves across the MLB community. Following the deal, an MLB insider labeled this as a “seismic” moment in the history of the franchise.

In the past few years, have tried to land some big names through the free agency. The team was ready to splash the cash for both Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto. At the end, they lost on both of this superstars.
Given that history, insider Keegan Matheson called it a “seismic” moment for the team. He expressed that this deal also puts the Blue Jays in position to be aggressive in long-term spending.
This is a seismic moment for the #BlueJays’ organization. This Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extension resets the clock and positions them to continue their aggressive spending long-term. It’s over. Vladdy is staying in Toronto… for good.
