Bo Bichette‘s tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays came to an end on Friday. The shortstop agreed to join the New York Mets on a 3-year, $126 million deal. Following this development, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made his feelings known and expressed that he was “sad” to see Bichette go.

Bichette joined the Blue Jays organization in 2016 through the draft. He would make his official debut for the team three years later in 2019.

Meanwhile, Guerrero Jr. joined the team in 2015 as an international free agent signing and made his MLB debut in 2019 as well. Since then, he and Bichette had been major league teammates.

Last season, the two of them played a key role in guiding their team to its first World Series berth since 1993. They suffered the ultimate heartbreak in Game 7 as they lost 5-4 in extra innings, having led the game 3-0 at one stage due to a 3-run home run from Bichette.

A few days after this loss, Bichette became a free agent. Despite heavy interest from the Philadelphia Phillies, the shortstop ended up signing with the Mets on a 3-year deal.

Following this, Guerrero Jr. would speak with Hazel Mae. During this, the 5-time All-Star admitted that he was “sad” to see his friend leave the Blue Jays. He later added that this was business, and he (Bichette) had to make a decision for his family.

Of course, I feel sad after playing with him for so many years, but like I’ve always said, this is a business, and you have to look out for what’s best for you and your family… I wish him the best. We won’t be teammates anymore, but our friendship will last forever.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said regarding Bo Bichette

Last year, Guerrero Jr. committed his future to the Blue Jays on a massive deal. He agreed to a 14-year, $500 million extension.

With the moves the Blue Jays made this offseason, it seemed likely that they would not re-sign Bichette. They were one of the teams that were involved in the sweepstakes for Kyle Tucker. If they wanted Bichette back, the team would not have got involved in the race for Tucker.

Bo Bichette to undergo transition in position following deal with Mets

Bo Bichette will start a new chapter of his MLB career next season following his 3-year deal with the New York Mets. During this, he will undergo a transition in his playing position.

The 27-year-old has played his entire career as a shortstop. However, the 2-time All-Star will not play in this position next year.

The reason for this is simple. The Mets currently have Francisco Lindor as their shortstop.

The 32-year-old has been one of the best shortstops in MLB history and has won 2 Gold Glove awards (2016 and 2019) with his former team, the Cleveland Guardians.

With him having locked this position, Bichette will need to play in a new position. As per reports from Jon Heyman, the American international will play in the 3rd base position and become the new 3rd baseman of the team.

This is a position that he has never played in his career. So he will have some challenges to overcome next season.

Speaking of the next season, the Mets are currently projected to have Jorge Polanco on 1st base and Marcus Semien on the 2nd base. Like Bichette, both of these stars joined the team this offseason, so the Mets will have 3 new faces in their infield.
