This year’s Paris Olympics has been marred by more scandals and controversies than the competitions themselves. The latest and potentially biggest scandal involves serious allegations that the USA has allowed doping in the Olympic Games for years.
On Wednesday, Reuters published an investigation report uncovering an alleged scheme used by the United States that allowed its athletes to compete without any penalty despite committing doping violations. In its report, the outlet revealed that the USA has used this scheme to get an advantage for three years between 2011 to 2014– one of whom was said to be a “high-profile” athlete who retired before the revelation.
Based on this report, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has strongly criticized the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for violating the World Anti-Doping Code as well as their regulations.
How must other athletes feel knowing they were competing in good faith against those who were known by USADA to have cheated?-- Contrary to the claims made by USADA, WADA did not sign off on this practice of permitting drug cheats to compete for years on the promise that they would try to obtain incriminating evidence against others.WADA claimed
While denying their personal involvement in this practice, WADA emphasized the gravity of the allegations, which implied that the USADA allowed athletes to compete in the Olympics without imposing any penalty on them or making their anti-doping rule violation public.
USADA and WADA in heated dispute over doping allegations
It all started when USADA called out WADA for announcing the doping allegations made against 23 Chinese swimmers were dismissed on the grounds of being false. Despite the severe allegations, they were allowed to compete in both the Tokyo and Paris Olympics and keep the medal.
But since Reuters’ report, WADA has struck back at the USA for their long practice of committing doping violations and getting an unfair advantage because of it.
It is ironic and hypocritical that USADA cries foul when it suspects other Anti-Doping Organizations are not following the rules to the letter while it did not announce doping cases for years and allowed cheats to carry on competing, on the off chance they might help them catch other possible violators.read the WADA statement
Given the severity of the allegations against the USA, the International Olympic Committee has warned to revoke the Games at the 2034 Winter Olympics, to be held in Utah. But the USA has straightway denied the allegations and even passed a bill in response to the above statement that they will cut off funding with WADA, which could be a big concern because the USA is their biggest proposition in the nation.
